Hands-on learning

At UVic, we encourage dynamic learning outside the classroom.

Balance your academic studies with hands-on work experience through a co-op or practicum. Travel overseas on an international exchange or join a field school with students from around the world.

The 2019 World University Rankings named us the top comprehensive university in Canada for graduate employability—our hands-on learning programs have a lot to do with that. You’ll graduate with experience working with experts in your field.

Academic experiences

Your academic program can give you so many experiences -- choose your area or interest below to see potential careers, what knowledge you'll learn, opportunities for related work experience, and hands-on learning courses.

Co-operative education

Build your career while you study. At UVic, 75 per cent of co-operative education (co-op) students get job offers before they graduate.

Through co-op, you’ll alternate terms in class with paid co-op work terms. It’s an ideal way to gain experience in jobs related to your field of study. You’ll try different jobs, earn a salary and meet employers.

Exchange programs

Combine your passion for travel with your university education through our exchange programs. Immerse yourself in another culture while earning credit toward your degree. Your global perspective will add to your future employability.

Community-engaged learning

Through community-engaged learning, you’ll make a vital impact in the community and enhance your academic studies. Help solve real-world problems and expand your comfort zone.

Team up with non-profit, small business or government partners. You could do ecological field research, support a social justice initiative or stand up for a cause you believe in.

Field schools

Field schools are intercultural short-term courses that take you out of the classroom. You’ll conduct hands-on study and research in locations across Canada and around the world. You’ll travel with a small group of students from UVic and other BC post-secondary institutions, working as a team under the guidance of a UVic faculty member.

Practicums

Some of our programs include a directed work experience in your field of study, known as a “practicum”.

Practicums let you put theory into practice and gain a sense of the real-world responsibilities you’ll face after graduation. You’ll enhance your professional experience and broaden your understanding of policy, practice, therapeutic work and community development.

Research-enriched opportunities

At UVic, research isn’t just for professors and graduate students. As an undergraduate student, you’ll find plenty of ways to get involved with research. Develop your analytical skills and accelerate your academic and career success.

Every year, the Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Awards (JCURA) enable exceptional undergraduate students to conduct research. You’ll work under the guidance and mentorship of UVic professors. As a successful applicant, you’ll receive $1,500 toward your studies and gain valuable experience.
