Preferential and limited hiring

Preferential and limited hiring assists the university to achieve diverse and equitable representation in the workplace, and to recruit employees whose identities enrich the ways in which we accomplish the academic mission and serve our community.

UVic Association for Black Professors and Academics

The UVic Association for Black Professors and Academics (UVABPA) is a faculty-led group dedicated to advocating for Black professors and academics at the University of Victoria. The Association is actively expanding its capacity to support Black scholars across all career stages at UVic. In addition, the UVABPA is strengthening collaborations with the Scarborough Charter Steering Committee and consulting with the Black Caucus Portfolio Holder at the UVic Faculty Association to advance the university’s commitments to addressing anti-Black racism and fostering Black inclusion on campus. Anti-Racism Initiative Grant

The Anti-Racism Initiative grant supports learning and teaching projects aligned with UVic’s commitment to anti-racism and the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging as set out in:

Funded projects can involve the design of new courses, the creation of new materials for existing courses or, course/program curriculum renewal to integrate EDI and/or engage students in anti-racism awareness and work.

  • Black Youth Helpline - positioned and resourced to promote access to professional, culturally appropriate support for Black youth, families and schools
  • Harambee Cultural Society - Student volunteer opportunities and connections for adoptees of African descent.
  • Healing in Colour - Mental health support based in Vancouver (virtual and in-person care) with a directory of BIPOC therapists. 
  • One Love Consulting - Provides anti-racism and equity facilitated discussions and consultation especially against persons of African ancestry. 
  • Pilates Carioca - Pilates studio for women to develop a strong body, rejuvenate people’s lives and help build a healthier society. 
  • SNIWWOC - An organization that confronts barriers that limit access to healthcare and full reproductive choice for Canadian BIPOC women, two- spirit, and non-binary folks.
  • SOCAFit - A judgement-free zone dance-based Soca fitness studio.
