Gathering student voices in UVic’s Equity Action Plan
The University of Victoria is calling on students to help shape the next iteration of the institution’s Equity Action Plan (EAP), which provides strategic direction related to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging across the community.
Our student engagement survey is currently open until February 13, 11:59 p.m.. Students who participate in the survey will be entered into a draw to win one of three iPads.
The EAP’s creation
First launched in fall 2022, the EAP was developed through extensive community consultation. The community-centred process led to the formation of 5 strategic goals with 56 concrete actions, drawn from community feedback, commitments from the Scarborough Charter, and leadership priorities. Together, these actions guide the strategic direction related to equity the university.
Last fall, UVic released Snapshot 2025, a high-level summary highlighting the progress of EAP actions and examples of initiatives underway across campus.
Why student voices matter
While institutional plans can seem distant from day-to-day student life, the EAP has a tangible impact on the university experience. For instance, EAP actions are currently advancing work related to identifying gaps in institutional support structures and highlighting barriers to equity across populations.
By participating in the update process, students can help to ensure that the revised plan remains attentive to the 2026 context of UVic students.
The 2026 update
The EAP is not undergoing a full rewrite. Many of its original actions are still in progress, and much of the work continues across campus. With that said, we also recognize that the context in which the EAP was originally developed has shifted significantly based on new and emerging challenges both within and beyond the community.
The EAP team began engagement efforts in November 2025 with a broad survey exploring how barriers to equity, diversity, and inclusion have shifted since the plan’s initial release. Our current phase of engagement will focus on identifying necessary revisions to existing actions and/or new actions that should be added to the plan based on our current context. This work will be informed by:
- The student engagement survey
- Discussions with student and employee advocacy groups
- Meetings with unions and key working groups
Next steps
The primary focus of the update is to ensure that each action in the plan is clear, actionable and tied to defined accountabilities. The EAP team will collaborate closely with leaders across campus to refine the plan’s structure and strengthen implementation pathways.
The revised Equity Action Plan is expected to be published on the EAP website in May 2026.
