Public talk: Embers of Pan-Africanism with Dr. Bright Gyamfi

This talk by Dr. Bright Gyamfi explores how insurgent ideas are sustained after the collapse of a radical government. Specifically, it examines how Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah’s overthrow affected the trajectory of Nkrumahism, a strand of Pan-Africanism and an ideology for African decolonization. This talk will also offer insights into our current politically charged world and what it means to be an activist scholar.

Black Staff Lunch & Lounge

We know there aren’t many chances for Black staff to connect so join us for an informal lunchtime gathering at the new lounge space in Clearihue C117 on the third Tuesday of every month! We’ll have some casual conversation starters and light refreshments - drinks and snacks to share. It’s BYOL (bring your own lunch). Acclaimed poet and Writing professor Shane Book (All Black Everything) together in conversation with current Writing graduate student Junie Désil (Allostatic Load): two powerful voices in contemporary Black Canadian literature reflecting on on their writing practices, the intersections of art and activism, and what it means to tell Black stories in the current moment.

BC Black History Awareness Society Keynote

Join Writing professor Wayde Compton in conversation with current Writing graduate student Junie Désil at this free public event, also featuring a musical performance by Caleb Hart. Compton co-founded Vancouver’s Black-led Hogan’s Alley Society and also Commodore Books, Western Canada’s first Black Canadian literary press, while Désil is an award-winning poet and author.
