Electronics & cell phone recycling

Recycling

Cell phones

  • To recycle your UVic cell phone, contact Network Services
  • Personal cell phones can be recycled in the battery and cell phone recycling bins here. Remove all confidential and presonal information prior to disposal

All cell phones are recycled through Facilities Management's Call2Recycle product stewardship program.

Electronics

To comply with privacy and security regulations, any electronic items that store data need to have their hard drives removed and destroyed, or "scrubbed" if before reallocation within the University.

Departments support by University Systems' Desktop Computer Support (DCST):

  • Contact your Desktop Computer Support person
  • DCST staff will remove confidential data and assess the value of the equipment for re-purposing options, and tag each piece of equipment with an Asset or Recycle sticker.

If your department is not supported by DCST:

  • Submit an online Surplus Declaration Form to Purchasing. Purchasing staff will assess the value of the equipment for re-purposing options, and tag each piece of equipment with an Asset or Recycle sticker.
  • If the item has been tagged with a Recycle sticker, please send a FMIS service request to FMGT for removal. Otherwise, DCST or Purchasing staff will arrange for removal.

All electronic items are recycled through Encorp’s Return-It Electronics Recycling Program.

Media

Electronic storage media (i.e. CDs, floppy disks, VHS tapes etc.) should be sent to University Systems for confidential shredding. Contact your DCST for further information.

If your media does not have confidential information, you can send it to Waste Reduction for recycling through Encorp’s Return-It Electronics Recycling Program.

Lighting

Facilities Management electricians recycle all light fixtures and lamps that they install and replace during a given day.

UVic does not accept personal light fixtures or bulbs for recycling, please visit http://www.lightrecycle.ca/ to find your nearest light recycling depot.
