The Department of Indigenous Education at the University of Victoria invites applications for a limited term appointment for Assistant Teaching Professor, Indigenous Language Reclamation Revitalization and Maintenance, to commence January 1, 2026. In accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference will be given to [members of the following groups: Indigenous peoples. Candidates from this group, who wish to qualify for preferential consideration, must self-identify.

The successful applicant will join a collegial department led by Indigenous faculty and supported by dedicated staff. Our team is committed to working with Indigenous communities and campus partners to develop high quality and responsive educational programs and research.

We are seeking an Indigenous scholar who is able to teach courses and work with/supervise undergraduate and/or graduate students in Indigenous Language Revitalization, reclamation and maintenance. In addition, and more specifically, during this appointment, the successful candidate will work closely with the manager of Indigenous Language programs in the Faculty of Education in planning and coordinating off-campus Indigenous language programs offered by the Faculty of Education. This will include developing & maintaining relations with Indigenous community partners and may include coordinating program delivery, recruitment of instructors and course writers, liaising with and developing partnerships with other academic institutions, provincial regulatory bodies, key community stakeholders, as well as departments within and external to the Faculty of Education. Teaching duties will vary depending on need and capacity and may include workshop facilitation for ILR learners and instructors, teaching and developing curriculum as required, program visioning & enactment, practicum supervision, and organizing and facilitating ILR methodology workshops, mentoring instructors.

The candidate will have the opportunity to shape and develop ILR programs and courses in our Faculty, in partnership with the ILR programs manager and relevant community stakeholders, as well as participate in and lead initiatives to integrate Indigenous knowledge into all academic areas within the Faculty and across the University. We anticipate an individual with the ability to contribute strongly to the profile of the Department and its teaching and administrative functions.

The priorities of the department and the ILR programming focus as much as possible on local languages, across Vancouver Island and neighboring territories, and therefore the successful candidate will have working knowledge and deep understanding that reflect this priority.

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $114,000 - $141,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

Requirements

The Department is interested in candidates who have:

  • Scholarly expertise in the area of Indigenous Language Revitalization, Reclamation and/or Maintenance with a Ph.D. or Master’s in Education.
  • Preferred specializations include Indigenous language proficiency building including teaching and learning methods and strategies, language planning, and Indigenous language policy analysis and development
  • Applied knowledge of Indigenous pedagogies and methodologies
  • Commitment to collegiality and collaborative, community-engaged scholarship and teaching
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to articulate the impact of settler colonialism on Indigenous languages in Canadian and/or global contexts
  • Contributions to decolonization and Indigenous community resurgence

In addition, the following qualifications would be considered assets:

  • Leadership experience in Indigenous language revitalization
  • Successful teaching and mentorship experience in undergraduate and graduate settings
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Experience writing grants and writing funding proposals
  • Creating and managing budgets for specific programming
  • Willingness to travel to communities to meet with community partners and students
  • Indigenous ancestry with lived experience in Indigenous communities, cultures and traditions
  • Commitment to learning, speaking and teaching an Indigenous language
