Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the area of avionics including communications, power systems, control, embedded systems, sensors, simulation, and guidance systems, and onboard electronics with an emphasis on aerospace applications.

Start Date: July 1, 2026

We acknowledge and respect the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the university stands, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has 27 faculty members with internationally recognized research and teaching programs. Six of our faculty members are IEEE Fellows, three are Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and four are fellows of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering invites applications from talented scholars for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2026.

The successful applicant will:

  • be appointed to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in a continuing position at the rank of Assistant Professor with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor considered for eligible applicants based on academic qualifications within their current institution;
  • become a researcher affiliated with the UVic Centre for Aerospace Research (CfAR), and significantly expand the CfAR portfolio of academic-industry research partnerships;
  • contribute to the design and delivery of course based curricula for the Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate (BEng) and Master’s of Aerospace Engineering (MEng) degree programs.

This research-intensive position benefits from existing infrastructure, equipment, human resources and an international collaborative network at the Centre for Aerospace Research (CfAR). The Centre provides a portfolio of design and manufacturing facilities that the successful applicant can exploit to design, build and operate innovative fixed wing aircraft and rotorcraft (as examples) and to develop hands-on experiential learning components in their courses.  The CfAR experimental laboratories in design, composites manufacturing, propulsion, avionics and flight sciences enable graduate students (MASc and PhD) and researchers to undertake challenging research that emphasizes a ‘design-build-fly’ philosophy to aerospace innovation. The successful candidate is expected to leverage these resources to aggressively pursue next-generation aerospace technologies that can help to transform how aviation and related technologies can be leveraged to improve the quality of life for Canadians and globally.

This position is one of two positions in aerospace currently being advertised as part of an institutional commitment to the national and global expansion of the aerospace research and development portfolio of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and CfAR. The second separate position is being advertised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UVic.  Candidates may find all positions for the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science here: Faculty Postings

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $123,000 - $152,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will:

  • hold a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • be a registered Professional Engineer in Canada, or be eligible to apply for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia
  • demonstrate particular analytical and/or experimental research creativity in the design, characterization, modelling, experimentation and/or systems integration of aerospace systems
  • demonstrate the potential to achieve international recognition in their field through dissemination of research (e.g., via academic publications, scientific reports, and patents)
  • have a demonstrated ability to establish collaboration across disciplines, develop academic, government and industry partnerships, and engage in aerospace initiatives with real world impact
  • have clear ideas and aspirations to contribute to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department’s drive to increase the diversity of our student population and foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all; and
  • demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate engineering education as evidenced by:
    • potential for excellence in teaching courses related to the Electrical, Computer, and Aerospace Engineering disciplines, and,
    • an inclusive approach to mentoring and supervising diverse students both in classroom and in research environments.
