University Systems provides digital video recording (DVR) services for video surveillance cameras run by UVic in our high-performance, monitored, and secure data centre. This service provides access to a secure web-based application allowing you to view the live camera feeds in real-time. Recorded images are retained for two weeks. Access to recorded images is governed by University Policy GV0235.

How do I request this service?

Before Systems can activate a DVR service you must:

  • submit a Privacy Review Form to the Vice-President Finance and Operations for review
  • receive approval from the Office of the University Secretary to run surveillance cameras, per University Policy GV0235
  • purchase suitable security cameras (Systems regularly re-evaluates new models security cameras for suitability. Contact helpdesk@uvic.ca for our current recommendations.)
  • install the cameras (Contact Facilities Management or an authorized vendor to arrange installation. Some cameras are available for testing and demonstration purposes.)
  • connect the cameras to the UVic network (Network setup must be performed by University Systems. Contact helpdesk@uvic.ca to request network setup. Regular fees for cabling and installing network ports will apply.)

When these conditions have been met, complete the online request form to request the DVR service.

How do I access this service?

Systems will provide you with a URL to a secure web application. Authorized users will be able to log in with their NetLink IDs to view live camera feeds in real-time and request secure review of stored footage.

What is the cost for this service?

The cost for this service is $12.50 per month per camera, which includes two weeks retention of video. This does not include the purchase or installation of cameras or the installation of network ports and cabling.

When is this service available?

This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.

Other information

Use of surveillance systems is subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and UVic Policy GV0235, Protection of Privacy (and Associated Procedures). University Systems is able to provide a consultation for any new projects to implement a video surveillance system.
