Microsoft Word macro harm reduction

Posted on January 17, 2017 at 12:50:17 pm by atfinlay@uvic.ca
Effective date: January 19, 2017 at 01:00:00 pm(6 hours ago)

Effective 6 hours ago: Due to an increase in reported activity, this change was made at 11:45am July 19, 2017 instead of 1:00pm July 19, 2017.

--------------

A number of higher education institutions have recently been targeted by malicious Microsoft Word macros. A Microsoft Word macro is a series of commands and instructions that you group together as a single command to accomplish a frequently used task in Word. These commands and instructions are capable of malicious activity and may run automatically and invisibly when a Microsoft Word document containing macros is opened.

As a preventative measure, on January 19, 2017, all Windows workstations supported by Desktop Support Services will be configured to block the use of unsigned Microsoft Word macros. Unsigned Microsoft Word macros are lacking a digital signature from a trusted publisher and pose the greatest security risk.

Microsoft Word 2010, 2013 or 2016: Unsigned macros contained in Microsoft Word documents will be blocked from running when a Word document is opened. Signed macros will continue to run.

Skype Server experiencing difficulties

Posted on January 19, 2017 at 12:47:09 pm by sinisa@uvic.ca
Effective date: January 19, 2017 at 12:44:00 pm(7 hours ago)

Effective 7 hours ago: Skype Service are back to normal. ESX guest migration landed the server on the EXS host whose ports were not configured with Skype vlans. We are making sure that this ESX host ports are mapped correctly.

-----

One of the skype servers is experiencing difficulties with the network at this moment. We are investigating.

Skype services should be unaffected for most users. Users that had to be moved to an alternate server may have experienced temporary connectivity issues with video conferencing.

Thanks.
