New Microsoft Teams version

Microsoft is upgrading the application you use for Microsoft Teams to a new version. The old version of Teams is now known as “Microsoft Teams (classic).” The new version of Teams is “Microsoft Teams (work or school).” On Dec 21st, 2023, University Systems will be changing the version of Microsoft Teams that opens by default to the new version.

Microsoft will start to require this new version of Teams in March 2024. To minimize disruption in the middle of a semester, we are making this change now. More information about this change and an overview video is available on Microsoft’s website.

Currently there is a known issue with Apple Macintosh computers running Monterey (macOS 12) where screen sharing will not work when you are in a Teams meeting. We recommend upgrading from Monterey to either Ventura (macOS 13) or Sonoma (macOS 14) for better compatibility with the new version of Teams.

If you are not able to upgrade your macOS and you need to use screen sharing in Teams’ meetings, you can switch back to Teams Classic by switching off the toggle at the top of the Teams app. Find instructions on how to switch to Teams Classic on Microsoft Support.

University Systems has been working with Microsoft on this issue. Microsoft has identified the issue, and we anticipate the issue will be fixed in a future Microsoft Teams update.
