Faculty Position in Industrial Ecology
The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position with expertise in Industrial Ecology such as life cycle assessment, circular economy, industrial symbiosis, climate mitigation, or sustainable production. The successful applicant may be research- or teaching-track and is expected to support our Master of Engineering in Industrial Ecology (MEng-INEC) through a combination of teaching courses in the MEng-INEC program, supervising capstone projects, and acting as Program Director. The successful applicant will be a member of the Civil Engineering Department and is also expected to contribute to teaching in the civil engineering undergraduate program.
Because the position is open to both research- and teaching-track applicants, applications are invited from a variety of backgrounds.

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of four departments in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. A major goal of this department is to be the greenest civil engineering department in Canada addressing the most pressing global environmental and sustainability challenges through engineering design, science, and practical solutions. Our research and graduate programs focus on green civil engineering solutions for Canada and beyond. Our undergraduate program teaches fundamental competencies supplemented with cutting-edge ideas from environmental science, building science and industrial ecology. Our one-year Master of Engineering in Industrial Ecology trains students to design sustainable, technologically sound systems by applying industrial ecology methods to understand and reduce environmental impacts across products, industries, cities, and economies within complex economic, political, and regulatory contexts. The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $123,000 - $150,000 UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.
Requirements
The successful candidate will:
- For the research-stream:
- Hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related discipline to Industrial Ecology
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence and the potential to achieve international recognition in industrial ecology through dissemination of research in traditional (academic literature) and/or non-traditional venues;
- For the teaching-stream:
- Hold a Master’s degree in civil engineering or a related discipline and significant experience in practice;
- Have experience of teaching industrial ecology
- Exhibit leadership or the potential to achieve leadership in advancing education such as through significant pedagogical inquiry or teaching innovation
- Both streams:
- Be a registered professional engineer in Canada, or be eligible to apply for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (details available at egbc.ca);
- Have sufficiently broad experience in industrial ecology to manage the IE program and supervise a diversity of IE capstone projects
- Have the ability to establish collaboration across disciplines, develop academic, government and industry partnerships, and engage in initiatives with real world impact.
- Have clear ideas and aspirations to contribute to the Civil Engineering Department’s drive to increase the diversity of our student population and foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
