Invention management

researcher in lab

Developing an innovative idea takes dedication and determination. Our research partnerships team is here to help you bring your innovations to market.

Tell us about your idea

Our experts help protect novel ideas and explore the best pathways for moving ideas from the lab to the market. We offer support in a variety of domains, including grant writing, IP protection, market analysis, licensing and industry collaborations.

You can tell us about your invention or to set up a meeting.

Protect your intellectual property

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) defines intellectual property (IP) as, “creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.”

You can protect your novel ideas and other IP through patenting, copyright or trademark. Protecting your IP has many benefits, including:

  • You ensure long-term benefits from your creative work
  • Your innovation is more desirable to investors. This can lead to strong partnerships that guide your innovation to market

Through a patent, the government grants you, the inventor, the right to prevent others from making, using or selling your invention from the day the patent was granted. This right lasts up to a maximum of 20 years after the day you filed your patent application.

UVic’s intellectual property policy

UVic's intellectual property policy is a “creator-owned” policy. In most cases, creators own their IP and have sharing obligations with UVic in the event of commercialization. This policy promotes a supportive climate for the development of IP. It helps to build mutually-beneficial partnerships that respect the interests of researchers, industry, UVic and the wider community.

Technology transfer process

We’ll create a targeted marketing campaign to engage industry members who would be interested in your technology. When a business expresses interest in gaining exclusive or non-exclusive use of the technology, our Research Partnerships team will negotiate licensing agreements. After this, royalties will be collected. As an inventor, you’ll receive your share of royalties based upon UVic’s intellectual property policy.

Partnerships

Our team facilitates research partnerships. We can connect you with external partners that include industry, government, not-for-profit organizations, other post-secondary institutions, and Indigenous governments and organizations.
