The University of Victoria School of Music invites applications from members of a professional string quartet for four 0.5 FTE tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor appointments in Strings (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, and Cello).

General Information

The UVic School of Music is dedicated to experiential learning and training for musicians and music scholars, turning passion into profession. We are proud to be the only “All Steinway School of Music” in Canada. The School is home to 45 performers, composers, educators, theorists, musicologists, and professional staff, as well as 200 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. We offer Bachelor of Music degrees in composition, music education, performance, musicology and sound studies, and musical arts along with a combined degree in Music and Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The School offers graduate degrees in composition, performance, musicology and sound studies, and music technology. Salary Range  

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this 0.5 FTE Assistant Teaching Professor position includes a competitive salary range of $99,000 to $122,000, prorated for a 0.5 FTE. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan. 

Requirements

Applications will be considered only from existing string quartets whose members all wish to be appointed in simultaneous but individual contracts. The successful candidates will each hold a 0.5 FTE Assistant Teaching Professor (“ATP”) appointment and will all be expected to maintain an active professional profile as a string quartet while contributing to the musical and academic life of the School through teaching, mentorship, creative activity, student recruitment, and service.

Responsibilities of the successful candidates will include:

  • Teaching applied lessons in their respective string disciplines, coaching chamber music ensembles at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and recruiting students;
  • Contributing to the School's curriculum through teaching in chamber music, string performance, and potentially in additional areas, depending on the needs of the School, such as musicology, music theory, composition, music technology, music education, or a related field;
  • Mentoring students in musical, academic, and professional development;
  • Engaging in teaching-stream scholarly activities, including maintaining an active professional profile as a string quartet through performances, recordings, masterclasses, workshops, and community-engaged activities that enhance the artistic profile of the School, Faculty, and University;
  • Engaging the university and greater Victoria community through concerts ;
  • Participating in service activities including committee work, jury and audition adjudication, and initiatives that advance the strategic priorities of the School, Faculty, and University.

Selection Criteria

Assessment of applications will consider both the collective achievements of the quartet and the qualifications, experience, and potential of the individual members. Applications will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. Demonstrated excellence and achievement as a professional string quartet;
  2. Evidence of a professional reputation at the national and/or international level, including but not limited to: performances, masterclasses, recordings, commissions, awards, festival invitations, and/or competition participation;
  3. Evidence of teaching effectiveness in applied individual string instruction;
  4. Demonstrated experience in chamber music coaching and pedagogy;
  5. Capacity to contribute to the broader School of Music curriculum through teaching in an additional area, if needed, such as performance practice, musicology, music theory, composition, music technology, music education, or related fields;
  6. Capacity to engage in scholarly activity appropriate to a teaching stream appointment as described in UVIC’s Faculty Collective Agreement (e.g. performances, masterclasses, workshops, and community-engaged activities);
  7. Commitment to student mentorship and recruitment;
  8. Demonstrated ability or potential to contribute positively to a collegial academic environment through service, collaboration, and professional conduct;
  9. Commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and supportive learning environments.

Assets

The following qualifications and experiences will be considered assets for individual members of the quartet but are not required:

  • International artistic recognition through: recordings, commissions, awards, festival invitations, competition successes, experience as a member of a quartet-in-residence;
  • Experience teaching graduate students and/or advanced chamber music; ensembles;
  • Demonstrated awareness and promotion of a broad array of composers and repertoires and musical styles;
  • Demonstrated success in student recruitment and program development;
  • Community-engaged educational or outreach initiatives;
  • Interdisciplinary musical or scholarly collaborations;

Evidence of leadership within academic, musical, or community settings.

The anticipated start date for these appointments is July 1, 2027.

  • Appropriate evidence of the quartet's artistic and creative activity, such as links to recordings, performances, external reviews or other professional accomplishments;
  • Contact information for three referees who can speak to the quartet's artistic accomplishments and professional activities.

  • A cover letter (1-2 pages) outlining the candidate's teaching experience, scholarly, creative and/or professional activities and future plans.

  • 2 confidential reference letters sent directly by the referees to music@uvic.ca
