Assistant Professor, Mechatronics and Robotics
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position from early-career academic researchers conducting high-impact research in any area of mechatronics, robotics, or intelligent mechanical systems. Areas of strong interest include advanced mechatronic design, sensing and actuation, and AI-enabled mechanical systems, autonomous and field robotics, intelligent control, human–robot interaction, soft and bio-inspired robotics, embedded and cyber-physical systems.
The successful applicant is expected to combine core expertise in mechatronics, robotics, embedded systems, dynamics, control and automation with a demonstrated potential to form a research program that incorporates recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and multidisciplinary design optimization for the synthesis of next-generation mechatronics and robotic systems. Interdisciplinary applicants and those collaborating across engineering, computer science, health, and environmental domains are especially encouraged.
The candidate's qualifications, experience, overall market demand, and rank will determine a final salary offer. Industry experience is an asset. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $120,000 – $143,000 UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves, and pension plan.

Requirements
The applicant will be required to have:
- hold (or be on the verge of completing) a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant discipline, with a specialization in Mechatronics & Robotics.
- be a registered professional engineer in Canada, or be eligible to apply for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (details available at www.egbc.ca);
- evidence of research excellence, as demonstrated through publications, awards, or impactful contributions
- demonstrated particular analytical and/or experimental research creativity in the design, characterization, modelling, experimentation and/or systems integration of robotic technologies.
- the potential to achieve international recognition in their field through the dissemination of research in both traditional (academic literature) and non-traditional venues;
- demonstrated abilities to collaborate across disciplines, and to develop academic, government, and industry partnerships
- have clear ideas and aspirations to contribute to the Mechanical Engineering Department's drive to increase the diversity of our student population and foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all; and
- demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate engineering education as evidenced by:
- potential for excellence in teaching courses related to the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering disciplines, and
- an inclusive approach to mentoring and supervising diverse students, both in the classroom and in research environments.
Postdoctoral experience, industrial collaboration, and interdisciplinary impact are assets. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria offers Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degree programs. We have 31 faculty members, over 550 undergraduate students, and over 140 graduate students. Industrial collaboration enriches our teaching and research activities, and our expertise in Mechatronics and Robotics, Clean Energy Systems, Biomedical Systems, Aerospace and Advanced Vehicles is demonstrated in vibrant undergraduate and graduate curricula that expose our students to cutting-edge engineering tools and technologies.

This position is one of four Assistant Professor positions being advertised in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria this year. The Department is at a watershed moment in its evolution; significant growth in student enrollment, diversification of undergraduate and graduate programs and a steadily growing portfolio of community and industry partnerships necessitate new Faculty who can actively contribute to the research and teaching excellence of the department in strategic areas of research and innovation, as well as to our effort to accelerate incorporation of disruptive digital tools and advanced computing into foundational mechanics sub-disciplines
