Safety & security services
In addition to responding to incidents, we also offer spaces and programs to help you feel safe and secure on campus.
In case of emergency, call 9-1-1 first. Provide your building name, building number (if known) and room number to the 9-1-1 operator.
Then call Campus Security at 250-721-7599. They can respond quickly, provide emergency first aid and direct ambulance and fire crews to your location.
SafeHaven
SafeHaven is secure space in the front foyer of the Campus Security Building. You can stay here safely for as long as you need and speak with a security officer if you want to. SafeHaven includes:
- A direct phone line to Campus Security
- Automated external defibrillator (AED) and naloxone
- Harm reduction supplies
SafeWalk
SafeWalk is a program designed to help you feel safe while moving around campus. A UVic security officer will meet you and walk with you to your destination. We will escort you anywhere on the UVic campus.
SafeWalk is available to everyone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
To arrange a SafeWalk escort, call Campus Security at 250-721-7599 or use one of the direct dial phones located around campus.
We’ll do our best to get your SafeWalk escort to you as soon as possible. However, there may be times when your escort is delayed. If you leave us a callback number, we’ll make sure to get in touch in the event of a lengthy delay.
Campus Alone
If you’re working or studying on campus outside of regular hours or in a less populated area, you can let Campus Security know and we will arrange to check in with you.
If you want to arrange a check in, call Campus Security at 250-721-7599 with:
- Your name, exact location and phone number
- Estimated time of departure (if this changes, call again to update us)
- Your mode of travel and, if applicable, a vehicle description and the location where you've parked your vehicle
Call us again just before you leave. If we don’t receive a call from you letting us know you’re leaving, a security officer will follow up and check on you.
We’ll make every effort to visit you while you are working alone. However, if we’re experiencing a heavy call volume, a visit may be delayed or unavailable.
Personal Safety Manager
We employ a Personal Safety Manager (PSM) to connect with the UVic community, address safety concerns and complains, and develop personal safety programs. The PSM can:
- Help create a safety plan
- Conduct workplace safety audits
- Facilitate workshops, orientations, and presentations for students, faculty and staff
- Provide referrals to other on-campus and community resources
If you have any concerns about your safety at UVic, you can email or phone our Acting PSM Jennifer Cawsey directly.
If you want to access everyday safety services (like SafeWalk and Campus Alone) or get help after business hours, you can always call Campus Security for immediate help.

Sexualized violence
The Sexualized Violence Resource Office (SVRO) supports all UVic students and employees impacted by sexualized violence, whether directly, indirectly or as someone offering support.
The SVRO is located in the Sedgewick Building. It's part of Equity and Human Rights (EQHR).
Campus security officers are available 24/7. We can help with referrals, accessing supports, safety concerns and personal safety planning.
Emergency planning
Emergency Planning helps the university prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. They offer resources for what to do in case of an emergency, how to use emergency equipment, and emergency procedures and evacuations.
We encourage the UVic community to take steps to be personally prepared for emergencies and disasters. There are over 600 UVic employees and students involved in a variety of emergency response teams.
