Campus Security staff are a diverse group of employees from varying cultures and experiences. We work to support everyone on campus.

UVic's Campus Security Services works 24/7/365 to maintain a secure, welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors. We provide assistance in emergencies, offer guidance when needed and help ensure that campus spaces remain accessible and inclusive for all.

Our staff are a diverse group of employees from varying cultures and experiences. We work to support everyone on campus.

Our approach is rooted in respect, care and collaboration—because safety is a shared responsibility.

Our teams

Security Operations

Our Security Operations team hires uniformed officers, patrol managers and specialists who support their work in community safety. They work 24/7 patrolling, responding to callouts, providing first aid, coordinating with emergency services, and providing SafeHaven, SafeWalk and Campus Alone services.

Parking & Commuter Services

The Parking & Commuter Services team manages UVic's parking lots and commuter-oriented services like employee bus passes and bike locker rentals. The customer service staff at the front desk of the Campus Security building are part of this team.

Personal Safety Manager

Our Personal Safety Manager acts as liaison between Campus Security Services and the UVic community. They develop personal safety programs and consult with students and employees about personal safety concerns.

Emergency Planning

UVic's Emergency Planning team proactively works to anticipate, mitigate, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Emergency services on campus

The UVic campus is located across two municipalities: Oak Bay and Saanich. These communities are our partners in keeping everyone safe.

Sometimes you may see firefighters, police officers or ambulance personnel on campus. They are here to help during emergencies or to support safety planning.

UVic Campus Security works closely with these emergency services to prepare and train together. This means that if an emergency happens, we can respond quickly and effectively.

Accountability

Your safety and trust matter to us. All Campus Security Officers are employees of the University of Victoria and follow the same policies and procedures as other UVic staff.

If you ever have feedback—whether it’s a concern or a comment—we welcome hearing from you. You can share your thoughts by contacting Campus Security management directly.

UVic Security Officers are licensed by the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. This ensures they meet provincial standards for training and professionalism.

If you have concerns about how your call or request was handled, you can reach out to the UVic Ombudsperson, an independent resource that helps resolve disputes within the UVic community.

We’re committed to being approachable, accountable and here for you.

Our uniforms

We want you to feel confident knowing who to turn to when you need help. UVic Security Officers wear uniforms that make it easy to identify us quickly in any situation.

Our uniforms feature UVic branding, so you know you’re speaking with someone trained to support your safety and well-being on campus. Most aspects of security uniforms are set by BC legislation, which is why they look similar across the province.

Beyond appearance, our uniforms are designed for function and comfort. They allow officers to carry essential safety tools and first aid equipment so we can respond effectively to the wide variety of calls we handle every day. Our officers carry:

  • radio
  • keys to campus buildings
  • notebook
  • flashlight
  • gloves and pocket mask for medical emergencies
  • naloxone for overdose situations
  • other emergency first aid equipment

What to expect

When you call us to make a report or ask for help:

  • We’ll ask for your name, V number and a contact phone number (just in case the call gets disconnected or we need to follow up).
  • We’ll ask for your location and a brief description of your concern or request so we can respond quickly.
  • If it’s an emergency, your call may be transferred to a 911 operator for immediate assistance.
  • The call taker will let you know if someone is coming to your location. They may ask a few clarifying questions to make sure you get the right help.
  • If your request is better handled by another department, we’ll guide you to the right place.
When campus security officers respond to a call in person:

  • The officer may ask to see your OneCard or another form of ID to make sure they’ve connected with the right person.
  • They’ll ask a few questions about what happened so they can understand your concern and provide the right support.
  • In some cases, they may ask for more detailed information to help address the situation.
  • If it’s an emergency or involves an offence, they can help you contact emergency responders or connect you with additional supports on or off campus.
  • For reports of concerning situations, one or more officers may attend to assess what’s happening and determine the best next steps.
  • If something feels off or you’re unsure what to do, we’d rather hear from you than have you worry alone. We’re here for you.
