Congratulations to Chris Eagle! He is this year’s recipient of the Harry Hickman Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Leadership. The Harry Hickman Award is the highest honour for teaching excellence at the University of Victoria. This award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and educational leadership.

IMAGINING UVic is a summer camp intended to encourage young women to pursue STEM fields. The program will be held on the UVic campus, providing participants with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the university environment. The program will run July 2 – 5, 2024, from 10:00am to 3:30pm each day. Interactive sessions lead by cutting-edge researchers will introduce participants to new and exciting math concepts which go beyond the BC curriculum. Participants will also have various opportunities to interact and form connections with professors and graduate students in mathematics.

Congratulations to our postdoctoral fellow Kehinde Olobatuyi for being awarded a Research Excellence, Diversity and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Kehinde's research uses statistics to help fight emerging infectious diseases. He is supervised by Laura Cowen.

Dr. Christopher Eagle of the University of Victoria has been named the recipient of the Canadian Mathematics Society (CMS) 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award for his innovative teaching style, student mentorship, and depth of subject knowledge. Congratulations Chris!

In recognition of Rod Edwards’ remarkable contributions to the field of Mathematical Modeling, we are inviting Rod’s current and former students, postdocs, close collaborators, friends and colleagues to attend this event, scheduled to take place on campus on February 17th and 18th, 2024.

There are approximately 20 positions ranging from 49 to 120 hours each, May through August 2024, and distributed as 8 to 12 hours weekly, for 12 weeks. Teaching Assistants mark assignments and midterms, instruct tutorials, or work in the Assistance Centre, which provides one-to-one tutoring with University of Victoria students enrolled in our first and second year Mathematics and Statistics courses.

The Faculty of Science invites applications from Indigenous scholars for three tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence as soon as possible.

Congratulations to our Master's student Kate Nimegeers for winning a poster prize in the AARMS-CMS Student Poster Session at the 2023 CMS Winter Meeting.

Congratulations to Andrew Lane and Nick Sima for winning the UVic Undergraduate Math Competition. Andrew was the overall winner while Nick was the winner among first and second year students.

Congratulations to our PhD student Shannon Ogden, who has been named a 2023 Vanier Scholar.

Leiden ranks UVic first in Canada for impact in math and computer science

For many people, math is a popular subject to hate. For graduating science student Elena Moss, it’s the subject she loves and has spent the five years of her degree studying—and the subject she intends to keep studying for the next five, as she heads to the Berlin Mathematical School in Germany this fall to begin graduate studies.

Applications for admission into the Data Science Program are being accepted from April 1 to April 30.
