Financial support
Graduate students may receive financial support through scholarships, fellowships, research funding and teaching appointments. Available support and eligibility vary by award and appointment. Canada Graduate Research Scholarships
The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship programs support graduate research and are administered jointly by NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR.
- Master’s scholarship (CGRS-M): $27,000 for 12 months. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons and meet the program’s other eligibility requirements.
- Doctoral scholarship (CGRS-D): $40,000 per year for 36 months. Eligible international students may also apply; they must be registered in a doctoral program at an eligible Canadian institution by the application deadline.
Application procedures and deadlines differ between the programs. Consult UVic’s CGRS-M application information and CGRS-D application information for current instructions and links to the full eligibility requirements. Applicants applying through UVic must meet the applicable UVic deadline.
UVic fellowships and awards
UVic offers additional funding awards for entering and continuing graduate students, administered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. These are awarded competitively after nomination by supervisors; students do not apply for them.
Research support
Graduate students not holding external fellowships are typically supported by funding from their supervisors' research grants, along with funds from the Faculty of Graduate Studies that are distributed by the department. The level of this funding varies, and each student’s funding offer is stated in the letter offering them admission to the program.
Teaching opportunities
Graduate students may apply for teaching assistant positions, subject to the qualifications and requirements of each position. Duties may include marking, leading tutorials and working in the Mathematics and Statistics Assistance Centre.

Sessional teaching appointments have separate qualifications and hiring procedures. Pay and working conditions for teaching appointments are governed by the applicable CUPE 4163 collective agreement.

Co-op, research internships and other opportunities
Graduate co-op offers opportunities to gain paid work experience during your degree. Discuss participation with your supervisor and the co-op program to determine how a work term would fit your studies.
Mitacs provides funding for collaborative research internships through Accelerate and international research visits through the Globalink Research Award. Eligibility, partner requirements and funding availability vary by program.
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) supports mathematical research and training through summer schools, workshops and other activities. Some activities offer financial support for participants; consult individual event announcements for eligibility and application details.
