Nurse Practitioner (MN)

Our Master of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner (NP) program is designed to expand your thinking and understanding about health and illness at a high level.

You will gain competency in assessment, diagnosis and treatment while working holistically with patients, families and communities at large. You’ll become a leader and change agent in the delivery of primary health care as both an independent clinician and a member of interdisciplinary teams.

Through our NP program, you will qualify as a family Nurse Practitioner in British Columbia. This is a course-based degree with a hands-on clinical component that takes place here in BC.

Outcomes

Students in this program will:

  • gain advanced knowledge, skills and expertise to meet the primary health care (PHC) needs of individuals and families across the lifespan and within the context of community
  • collaborate effectively with individuals, families, communities and other health and social service professionals to ensure high quality, comprehensive, holistic PHC
  • demonstrate leadership through advocacy for optimal client care, optimizing the nurse practitioner role within the interprofessional team and facilitating systems change
  • identify and implement research-based innovations that improve client care and the functioning of organizations and/or systems
  • understand legislative and socio-political issues that influence health policy and build strategies to improve healthcare access and healthy public policy

Admission requirements

  • Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in nursing from an institution recognized by UVic
  • Equivalent of a minimum B+ (77%) average in the final two years of your degree

If your first language is not English, you must provide proof of language proficiency. Learn more about language requirements, including allowable exemptions and tests.

Program specific requirements

  • You must have completed an upper level (300 or 400) undergraduate statistics course from a recognized post-secondary educational institute. You must have completed it within the last 5 years and have a final grade of B or higher.
  • During the program, applicants must be a resident of British Columbia and hold a valid RN practicing licence.

As part of your application, you must submit:

  • A personal resumé including your education background, employment history, professional/academic affiliations and other achievements such as publications or awards.
  • Verification of registration as an active practicing nurse.
  • Two assessment reports from academic referees. We recommend that your referees attach a letter of reference in addition to the assessment report. If it has been more than five years since you last attended a post-secondary institution, we recommend that you include two assessment reports from current or former employers in place of academic referees.
  • A personal statement (max. 800 words) that clearly addresses the following questions in detail:
    • Describe your understanding of the competencies and scope of practice for nurse practitioners (NP) in BC.
    • Reflect on your nursing practice experiences and the goals of the Master in Nursing: Nurse Practitioner option. How does your understanding of the nurse practitioner (NP) option fit with your career goals as an advanced practice nurse?
    • Describe how your academic education and practice experiences to date contribute to preparation for Family Nurse Practitioner studies and your commitment to and knowledge of this advanced practice role in health care in BC. Include any leadership/research activities that you have participated in.
    • For Indigenous applicants, include your past, present, and future connections with the Indigenous community and how your Indigenous identity informs your nursing practice.
