Visual Arts and Computer Science

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Why choose Visual Arts & Computer Science at UVic?

This program is for students who want to create with both code and creativity. You’ll combine studio art with computer science to design, build, and critique digital media, interactive experiences, and technology-driven artworks.

What makes this program different:

  • Interdisciplinary focus: Integrate drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video and digital media with programming and computing.
  • Two degree options: Graduate with either a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  • Career-ready creativity: Build skills that apply to digital media, games, UX, interactive art, creative technology and beyond.
  • Hands-on learning: Learn by making, experimenting and exhibiting — not just by studying theory.

Which degree is right for you?

You can choose to complete this program as either a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). You’ll take the same core courses in both degrees. The difference is whether you want your degree to be framed primarily around computer science or studio art practice.

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Choose the BSc if

  • Computer science and math are central to your academic identity
  • You want strong credibility for tech-focused roles or science-based graduate study
  • Your creative work is powered by systems, code and computation
  • You want to be seen first as a technically trained computer scientist who uses art and design creatively.
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

Choose the BFA if

  • You want to be seen first as a professional artist or designer who uses computing as a creative tool.
  • Studio practice, critique, and creative authorship are core to your identity
  • You’re aiming for careers or graduate study in art, design or digital media
  • Technology supports your artistic vision rather than defining it

Student life & community

You’ll be part of a close-knit creative community that extends beyond the classroom. Get involved through:

  • Visual Arts Students Association: Exhibits, events, and social activities throughout the year
  • Art opportunities on campus: Mural projects, public art initiatives, and creative collaborations
  • Local galleries and museums: Including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and alumni-run spaces.

Victoria’s arts scene will be part of your education.

Hands-on learning

  • Work in studio environments across multiple visual art disciplines
  • Participate in field trips, exhibitions, and critiques
  • Explore extended media and video art
  • Conduct your own creative and interdisciplinary research

Co-operative Education (Co-op)

  • Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
  • Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
  • On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
  • Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.
