Student housing

girl in residence room

UVic student housing is more than just a place to live. Here you’ll find a supportive community and new friends. Plus, live close to classes, the library and all the resources UVic has to offer.

2021-22 school year

Our residences will be open for the 2021-22 year. However, some of our services have temporarily changed due to the global pandemic. Find the latest housing COVID-19 information for 2021-22.

First-year priority

If you're a current high-school student in your graduating year, we normally guarantee you a space in UVic housing for your first year. We have temporarily replaced this with a first-year priority lottery for the 2021-22 school year.

How the lottery works: We will use a lottery to determine your place on the applicant list, then we make room offers according to that order. We'll try to accommodate your preference for accommodation type, but we cannot make guarantees.

To be eligible for the first-year priority for the 2021-22 academic year, you must:

  1. Graduate from high school in 2021.
  2. Not attend any post-secondary institution before attending UVic.
  3. Accept your offer of admission to UVic and pay your acceptance deposit of $200.
  4. Apply for UVic housing by June 30, 2021

Applications for the 2021-22 academic year opened on February 1. Applications received after June 30 are not eligible for the lottery, but you will be placed on a waitlist.

Indigenous housing program

We offer a number of guaranteed spots in on-campus housing for eligible Indigenous students each year.

If you’re interested, complete an online application for residence (single student housing) or family housing. Then email with your full name, UVic student V# and indicate your interest in the Indigenous housing program.

To learn more about this program, contact Allegra Sobotkiewicz at or 250-472-4534.

Room types

Our student housing is grouped into neighbourhoods. Each has its own community leaders, activities and events. Most residence buildings are mixed gender, but some feature designated single gender floors.

We have changed some of our unit types for the 2020-21 school year due to COVID-19. For Fall 2021, we hope to be able to offer our full range of unit types.

Living learning communities

We also offer living learning communities (LLCs). These unique residence communities bring students with common interests or areas of study together. Our LLC themes are:

  • arts collective
  • business community
  • engineering community
  • global citizenship community
  • health and wellness community
  • humanities community
  • leadership and civic engagement
  • science community
  • sustainability community

If you would like to apply to an LLC, you must select it as one of your five preferences in your residence application.

Specialized housing requirements

If you’re a student with a disability or a chronic health condition, you may be eligible for priority consideration. Our accessible residence rooms have built-in accommodations, such as roll-in showers and lowered bedroom amenities and countertops. If you require an accessible residence room, please make sure you select this option when you apply to residence.
