Computer Science and Health Information Science

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Why choose Computer Science & Health Information Science at UVic?

This program is for students who want to work on the technical side of health care. You’ll learn how to design, build and manage digital systems used by hospitals, clinics and health organizations. The focus is on computer science skills with real-world impact, not clinical training.

You’ll combine strong computer science foundations with an understanding of how health systems work, preparing you for technical careers where technology supports patient care and decision-making.

In this program, you will:

  • Build skills in programming, software systems and data
  • Learn how health information systems are designed and used
  • Work with real-world health and technology challenges
  • Prepare for technical careers in health-focused environments

What will you study?

Your coursework focuses on how technology supports real health care decisions and operations. You’ll take courses that explore:

  • Information technology — software development, databases, systems architecture and security
  • Clinical systems — how digital tools support patient care, clinical workflows and health records
  • Business and organizational aspects of health care — understanding how hospitals, health authorities and government systems operate

Hands-on learning

Co-operative Education (Co-op)

  • Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
  • Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
  • On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
  • Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.

Smart Home Lab

Explore how technology can support health, wellness and independent living. You’ll work with real devices and systems used in health care and community settings, such as sensors, monitoring tools and data platforms.
