Chemistry for the Medical Sciences

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Why choose Chemistry for the Medical Sciences at UVic?

If you like chemistry but see your future in health care, this program gives you the best of both worlds:

  • Strong foundation in chemistry
  • Courses aligned with medical and health professional school requirements
  • Flexible pathway with options beyond traditional chemistry
  • Co-op opportunities to gain real-world experience
  • Supportive science community on the Victoria, BC campus.

Different from Chemistry

Traditional Chemistry majors follow a chemistry-intensive path that’s ideal for graduate school or careers working directly in chemistry research or industry.

Chemistry for the Medical Sciences balances upper-level chemistry with carefully selected courses from other departments. This structure helps you complete the recommended prerequisites for health-oriented professional programs while keeping your options open. It’s a better fit if you enjoy chemistry but want broader preparation for careers in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or other health fields.

Hands-on learning

Co-operative Education (Co-op)

  • Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
  • Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
  • On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
  • Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.

Student life & community

  • Chemistry Students’ Society – A student-run club where you can make friends, attend events and connect with others in your program.
  • Scientist in the Schools program – Deliver interactive presentations to K–12 students and inspire the next generation of scientists.

Research

Gain hands-on experience in real research labs, working alongside world-class UVic researchers. Use advanced equipment, collect and interpret original data and explore meaningful scientific questions — with the potential to contribute to published research.

Through Research Experience courses in your second and third year, you can work in a research lab a few hours per week, collaborate with graduate students and faculty members and discover whether research is part of your future.

Chemistry Mentoring Program

A mentor in the Faculty of Science can support your academic journey and career goals. You’ll receive guidance on course planning, professional development and next steps toward medical or health professional programs.
