Congratulations to women's studies students Jodi Beniuk and Michelle Moreno, first and second place winners of the 2014 national Undergraduate Essay Prize awarded by the Women's and Gender Studies et Recherches Féministes (WGSRF) association. The awards ceremony was held at Brock University in St. Catherine's, Ontario during the 2014 Congress.

Faculty Fellowship for Laura Parisi

Dr. Laura Parisi has been awarded a University of Victoria Faculty Research Fellowship through the Centre for Co-operative & Community Based Economy. An Associate Professor with the Department of Women's Studies (cross-appointed with the Department of Political Science), Laura’s research project is titled “Women’s Empowerment, Fair Trade and International Development: A Case Study of the Senanga Basket Co-operative”.  The project proposes to assess the impact of the international development aid environment on the long-term viability of the co-operative.   It also seeks to analyze the gendered dynamics of the cooperative and how participation in the cooperative may or not contribute to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

1979: Women pave the way for women's studies

From The Ring, March 23, 1979, p.2

Women in Victoria will soon be able to study contributions in Canada made by others of their sex, thanks in part to the efforts of four women on campus. As members of the women’s studies committee, they are hoping that enough women from the campus and community will register in UVic’s first women’s studies course to make it a success. Men are also welcome.

Laura Parisi awarded $200,000 SSHRC grant

Around the world, government support for human rights and women's rights based organizations is in danger of disappearing. Dr. Laura Parisi will direct a $197,692 SSHRC partnership development project, working with the Victoria International Development Education Association (VIDEA) and practitioners from Canada, the U.K. and southern Africa. The project aims to research the impact of dwindling funding and develop strategies to help human rights organizations continue to work on long-term, sustainable development solutions.
