Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Why choose Mathematics at UVic?

Develop strong problem-solving skills and learn how to approach complex questions mathematically. UVic’s flexible program lets you explore areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and data science while shaping a path that fits your interests. Mathematics reveals patterns that help explain the world around us — from climate systems and disease modelling to computing, finance and communications technology.

Which degree is right for you?

Both the BA and BSc in Mathematics study the same core areas of mathematics, including calculus, algebra, statistics and mathematical reasoning. The main difference is what you study alongside mathematics.

BA in Mathematics
  • More flexibility to combine math with other subjects.
  • Room for electives in areas like economics, social sciences or computing.
  • A good choice for interdisciplinary study.
BSc in Mathematics
  • Stronger focus on science and technical applications
  • More coursework connected to computing, data and scientific fields
  • A good choice for technical or science-based pathways
Sample career paths for graduates with a BA in Mathematics:
  • policy analyst
  • economist data analyst
  • teacher or educator
Sample career paths for graduates with a BSc in Mathematics
  • data scientist
  • software developer
  • quantitative analyst
  • research scientist

Combined degree programs

Combine your interest in mathematics with a second subject in one of our combined degree programs. You’ll get a broader education and discover exciting new opportunities.

Hands-on learning

Co-operative Education (Co-op)

  • Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
  • Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
  • On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
  • Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.

Student life & community

  • Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Club — Meet other math students through talks, bowling nights, game nights and math-movie events.
  • Association for Women in Mathematics — A welcoming community that supports mentorship, highlights women’s contributions to mathematics and encourages careers in the field.
  • Math Mania volunteer program — Visit local elementary schools to share math through games, puzzles and hands-on activities.
  • Math competitions — Challenge yourself in competitions open to all UVic undergraduates, including first-year students.

Support for your math and statistics courses

Mathematics can be challenging, but you will never have to tackle it alone. The Math & Stats Assistance Centre provides free tutoring for students taking mathematics or statistics courses.

Where a mathematics degree can take you

Mathematics and statistics graduates work across many industries because strong analytical thinking is valuable everywhere. Common career paths include:

  • data science and analytics
  • software development
  • finance and quantitative analysis
  • research and academia
  • environmental modelling
  • health and epidemiology
  • artificial intelligence

Mathematics also underpins technologies such as internet search, cybersecurity, communications networks and climate modelling.
