Health Information Science
Bachelor of Science (BSc)
Why choose Health Information Science at UVic?
Health care runs on information. In this program, you’ll learn how to design, manage and improve the systems that help health care professionals make better decisions—while protecting patient privacy and data security.
At UVic, Health Information Science brings together health care, management and technology in a hands-on, career-focused degree. You’ll gain practical experience working with real health data and technologies used across hospitals, clinics and public health systems.
What is health information science?
Health information science (also known as health informatics) focuses on how health data is collected, managed and used to support patient care, health systems and decision-making.
You will learn how to:
- Collect, store, and communicate health data
- Prepare and analyze data to support health care decisions
- Design and implement technology solutions in health settings
Hands-on learning
Co-operative Education (Co-op)
- Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
- Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
- On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
- Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.
Smart Home Lab
Virtual and digital health care are becoming essential parts of modern health systems. In UVic’s Smart Home Lab, you’ll explore how technology supports care beyond traditional clinical settings.
You’ll test and evaluate emerging digital health tools, gaining insight into how virtual care, remote monitoring, and connected technologies improve access, safety and quality of care.
