This roundtable series regularly convenes leaders from across academia, industry, and government and non-governmental organizations alike, to examine the pressing issues in Southeast Asia as they relate to regional and global affairs.

 


Global South Colloquium

The Global South Colloquium provides a forum for regular interdisciplinary exchange and intellectual exploration on the history and politics of globalization. The colloquium focuses its attention on the “Global South,” traditionally referring to those states that emerged out of the shadows of European imperialism.

 


Migration & Mobility

CAPI hosts a dedicated migration and mobility program, which brings together experts in the field from all over the world to share expertise and knowledge of migration and mobility issues related to Asia.

 


Past Wrongs, Future Choices

A 7 year, SSHRC funded project that builds on and expands the work of the highly acclaimed Landscapes of Injustice project, Past Wrongs, Future Choices aims to extend and mobilize knowledge of an instructive twentieth-century history: the racialized uprooting, internment, dispossession, and deportation of civilians of Japanese descent (Nikkei) in in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, and the United States.

 


Secularism, Secularization and Nationalism in South Asia

This project explores the dynamic and interactive relationship between religion, nationalism and the evolving modern institutions and public sphere in colonial India.

 


International Research Programs

 

imageSince 2021, CAPI has hosted numerous South Korean researchers who are sponsored by their government to conduct research on various policy issues in a comparative context. CAPI has also developed an International Legal Research Program which offers research opportunities specifically for international lawyers, prosecutors and judges.

 


Covid-19 in Asia: Law and Policy Contexts

In an effort to contain the Covid-19 virus, governments have responded with extensive, and often unprecedented, measures restricting the daily lives of their citizens and functioning of society. CAPI has galvanized its international network of legal scholars and social scientists to examine how these first-wave policies and practices – and the trade-offs they require - have played out across Asia.

Our South Asia Global Forum promotes academic research, teaching and public engagement with South Asia and multi-faceted South Asian diasporic populations as a link to globally situated questions and conversations.

 


Asia in Africa

From China's Belt and Road Initiative to South Asian involvement in the African garment industry, our "Asia in Africa" programming focuses a lens of critical inquiry on the issues and implications of increasing Afro-Asiatic relations.

A seven year, multi-partner research project housed at CAPI exploring the forced dispossession of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War.

 


Regulating Globalization in South & Southeast Asia
