Learning and Teaching Grants

Grant funds distributed by the Division of Learning and Teaching Innovation (LTI) enable faculty members, sessional lecturers, laboratory instructors, academic units and staff to design and implement course and curricular reforms in their discipline. These learning and teaching grants reflect the vision, values and priorities of the UVic Strategic Framework.

Projects are funded to a maximum of $5,000 and must be completed within 2 years. LTI distributes these funds on behalf of the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost (VPAC) and facilitates adjudication as a non-voting entity.

Timeline

Grant types

The anti-racism initiative grant supports learning and teaching projects aligned with UVic’s commitment to anti-racism and the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging as set out in:

Funded projects can involve the design of new courses, the creation of new materials for existing courses or, course/program curriculum renewal to integrate EDI and/or engage students in anti-racism awareness and work.

The scholarship of teaching and learning grant supports empirical research that aims to improve teaching and learning while promoting an interactive community of scholars.

Funded projects involve research that enhances student learning within the context of a particular course, type of course or program. Research addresses significant themes, such as enhancing student-faculty interaction, supporting diversity, increasing Indigenous and international inclusivity, encouraging success in writing, qualitative and quantitative skills or engaging students in undergraduate research.

The course design/redesign grant supports the design of a new course, the redesign of an existing course and projects that propose impacts across multiple courses. This grant encourages instructors to design in ways that are pedagogically innovative and fill gaps in academic program curriculum.

Funded projects apply learning principles and intended outcomes that incorporate active and/or participatory learning strategies and follow principles of accessible pedagogy, for example Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Eligibility

Single or co-applicants who directly support student learning and the student experience at UVic are eligible to apply for LTI grants including: research stream faculty, teaching stream faculty, sessionals, laboratory instructors, academic units and academic staff.

Previous LTI grant recipients may apply. If your grant is still active, you must close it out before applying for a subsequent LTI grant. You may not apply to more than one LTI grant in the same year. Email LTI's Programs Coordinator to begin the grant closeout process.

Application process

  • review the guidelines and criteria for the grant you wish to apply for
  • prepare your application, including the budget template. Review rubrics to understand how your application will be adjudicated
  • submit your application by Februrary 23, 2027 at 11:59 pm

Budget

As part of your application submit a budget with a justification for each item spent.

  • Pay for undergraduate, graduate, or other research assistants
  • External consultants, for example Indigenous Elders*, essential to the successful completion of the grant
  • Fees to participate in relevant training and workshops to support project goals
  • Commercial services necessary for the completion of the grant projects (e.g. video editing and audio editing)
  • Equipment essential for the execution of the proposed grant project (e.g. the design of a course) and/or that enables learning activities/assessment (not general capital purchase) with clear benefit beyond a single offering.

*When working with Indigenous Elders adhere to guidelines of protocol, hosting, and payment for *SELWÁN ȽTE, Knowledge Keepers and Community Members.

  • Travel
  • Course release
  • Pay for the grant holder(s) to carry out work related to the grant
  • Teaching Assistants for timetabled courses Equipment or supplies normally supplied by the University
  • Commercial services (other than those stated in the list of eligible expenses)
  • Academic work costs such as journal subscriptions
  • Registration and travel to academic conferences (these may be covered through
  • Professional Development or other UVic funds)

Ethics requirements

Some proposed grant projects involve the collection of data from human participants, student coursework or student research activities. In these cases, the UVic Human Research Ethics Board (HREB) must approve the project. The principal applicant is responsible for ensuring that ethics approval is obtained prior to data collection. Email ethics@uvic.ca for further details. 

Note

Ethics approval is not required in advance of applying for your grant. All grant-funded projects that require research ethics approval must be associated with a continuing faculty member.

Awardee commitments

Reporting

You are asked to submit an online progress report one year after your grant is awarded. Summarize the progress, challenges, and successes of the project to date.

Grant completion

The LTI office will contact you following the completion date of your project (two years after receiving the grant funds). If you complete your grant before the two year deadline contact LTI's Program Coordinator to begin the grant closeout process. LTI grant recipients are required to participate in a form of project outcomes dissemination determined in consultation with the grant advisor.

Project dissemination

Choose from the following as a method to report out your grant:

  • present or lead a workshop at Let’s Talk About Teaching
  • prepare a video or audio clip summarizing the outcomes of your project
  • feature your project in the LTI newsletter
