Brightspace help guide
About the tool
Brightspace is UVic’s centrally supported learning management system (LMS) used in online and in-person courses to access and share materials, manage and submit assessments, post grades, post and receive announcements, and support course communication.
Student support
The documentation below primarily applies to instructors teaching with Brightspace. For student documentation, see our guide on UVicLearn or contact the Computer Help Desk for technical issues.
Meet with us
We are here to help you with building, designing, and navigating issues with your Brightspace sites.
Getting started
Instructors are automatically added to Brightspace credit (CRN) courses once they are listed as the Instructor of Record in Banner by their department. Email us for assistance if your teaching appointment has not been processed yet but your department has confirmed it.
To access Brightspace, visit https://bright.uvic.ca and enter your Netlink ID and passphrase.
Watch the Brightspace video on navigating Brightspace as an instructor. Edit your user profile, notifications, and account settings by changing your personal settings.
- In the My Courses widget (left), hover over a course
- Select the three dots in the right corner, then Pin
Please refer to the D2L documentation on internet browser compatibility and troubleshooting. If you have trouble interacting with something on Brightspace, please ensure that your browser is up to date and supported, or email us
Course content & design
Students access course materials, learning activities, and other resources through the Content tool in Brightspace. Instructors can create and organize content using either the Classic Content Experience or the New Content Experience. If you have the Instructor or Supplemental Instructor role, you can switch between the two at any time. The tabs below outline the differences between the two experiences and explain how to turn on the New Content Experience.
Our learning experience designers are also able to help you with designing your course.
The New Content Experience uses the terminology of units (modules/folders) and lessons (sub-modules/subfolders)
Adding content tutorials:
- Create a new unit
- Create a new lesson
- Create a page with a template for more accessible content. Note that adding a template will overwrite any existing content, so have a copy of your content elsewhere just in case. Settings information for pages is available (Create new content and Format your document).
- Existing Brightspace content (e.g., a quiz, assignment you built)
- Add files from your computer/device
- Select Content in the navigation bar, then the unit you want to add the tool to.
- Select Add Existing, then External Tool Activity.
- In the pop-up window, select the tool you wish to add.
Hiding content
- Select Content in the navigation bar, then the thing you want to hide.
- Select the Visible toggle (left of Add Existing button) until it says Hidden. It will then show an eye with a slash through it.
Adding content
- Create a new module/sub-module
- Create a new topic (including adding existing Brightspace activities)
- Create a page with a template for more accessible content (video on adding a template from 0:00 to 1:24). Note that adding a template will overwrite any existing content, so have a copy of your content elsewhere just in case.
To add Echo360 or another third-party tool (e.g., Course Reserves, Zoom):
- Select Content in the navigation bar, then the module you want to add the tool to.
- Select Existing Activities, then External Learning Tools.
- In the pop-up window, select the tool you wish to add.
To re-order your content:
- Click the eight dots icon to the left of the module/sub-module name.
- Drag it to the desired location.
- Locate the item in Content
- Select the drop-down menu to the right of its title, then Edit HTML
- Make your changes.
- Select Save and Close when finished.

Communication
Brightspace offers several tools to communicate with your class. The options below outline the different ways to reach students and when each might be most useful.
The Classlist tool can be used to send emails and add existing Brightspace users.
Use announcements to share important updates, reminders and course information with students. Announcements appear on the course homepage and can also be sent to students by email if they have opted in to receive notifications. Students can choose to receive email notifications of announcements to their preferred email (this may or may not be an @uvic.ca email address). Emails for announcements are only sent out when the Brightspace site is active, the start date (if set) has passed and the student has chosen to opt in to emails for announcements.
