Learning Innovation for Teaching Program (LIFT)

The Learning Innovation for Teaching (LIFT) in post-secondary education program is designed to support UVic instructors in developing intentional, evidence-informed and context-responsive teaching practices. The program is cohort-based and offers a comprehensive mix of workshops and self-paced courses, aligned with UVic’s commitments to accessibility, Indigenization and digital literacy.

Whether you are new to teaching or looking to deepen your scholarly and reflective practice, LIFT provides the structure, community and tools to advance your teaching.

Program overview

The program is blended with both in-person and online modules, combining self-paced learning, interactive workshops, reflective practice, peer discussions and structured professional development.

You can complete the program in 11–18 months, depending on your registration date and the availability of courses and workshops.

1. Take the four required courses

4 hrs online + 90 min workshop

Fundamentals of Course Design

Learn how to design inclusive, aligned and intentional courses using student-centered approaches.

3 hrs online + 120 min workshop

Technology-Enhanced Teaching

Explore UVic’s learning technology ecosystem and how to effectively use it to support your teaching. 

3 hrs online + 90 min workshop

The Science of Learning

Examine cognitive load, memory, metacognition and implications for teaching.

3 hrs online + 90 min workshop

Cultivating Dialogue: Creating Respectful Inclusive Classrooms

Discuss how to cultivate respectful and inclusive classroom dialogues and engaged learning environments.

 2. Choose one of two professional development courses (two options)

Brightspace + 90 min workshop

Creating your Narrative: Teaching Dossier

Craft an effective teaching dossier focused on feedback and narrative design that meaningfully represents your teaching philosophy, practice and impact.

Peer Feedback

Learn how to structure the process of peer feedback for your teaching and learning practices through meaningful feedback from your peers.

 3. Choose any two electives

These electives highlight contemporary teaching practices on topics such as accessibility, large class engagement or generative AI. 

 4. Finish with the capstone course

3hrs + two 90 min workshops

Reflective Teaching: From Scholarly Teaching to SoTL

Introduces foundation Scholarly Teaching and SoTL principles, ethics, and small-scale inquiry design.

Certificate requirements

 To receive the certificate, participants must:

  1. Complete all six courses (including attending the corresponding in-person workshops) and submit the required assignments as applicable
  2. Attend two additional elective workshops offered by LTI
  3. Complete the capstone course (includes asynchronous course and two in-person workshops)
