Suggest a tool

At UVic, we actively foster an innovative and inclusive learning environment by ensuring new technologies are thoughtfully integrated to benefit our entire community. All learning tools are carefully evaluated through a structured adoption process, including rigorous testing for pedagogical alignment, security requirements, and privacy impacts. This ensures that every technology we adopt supports effective teaching, protects user data, and enhances the overall learning experience.

Process

The review process includes the following six components:

  1. Initial review: assessed by LTI
  2. Functional check: user-friendliness, availability and user capacity
  3. Accessibility assessment: compliance check W3C, WCAG 2.0 standards and potential costs for learners
  4. Technology compatibility: common equipment, browsers, Uvic platforms addressed
  5. Privacy safeguards: review of data handling, account requirements, student material ownership
  6. Learner-centred evaluation: learning-centred teaching potential and classroom alignment

LTI then offers adoption recommendations and if needed, deeper security reviews.

Considerations

Some key considerations for adoption, integration and support of new learning technologies include:

Assesses the number of users who will benefit and the uniqueness of the tool’s functionality. Pilot testing with instructors and students may be conducted to demonstrate value before institutional adoption.

Evaluates whether the tool is easy to use, accessible, flexible, reliable, and secure, and whether it supports learner-centred practices and UVic’s strategic priorities.

Requires a privacy impact assessment and FIPPA-compliant integration into the Learning Technology Environment. All tools must meet UVic security standards.

UVic does not use plagiarism detection tools due to concerns about data collection and intellectual property. Instead, we prioritize student privacy and education on academic integrity.
