Accessibility

Incorporating accessibility practices into our teaching and learning ensures every student has equitable access to learning, opportunities for achievement, and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of their educational program.

Accessible pedagogy is an approach to teaching and learning that recognizes the barriers students with disabilities (and others) may encounter and works to proactively mitigate these barriers. Expanding accessibility in teaching and learning requires a comprehensive approach that reflects the complex dynamics of the learning process.

Accessible teaching strategies

Many academic accommodations used by students at UVic can be supported through accessible teaching strategies. While these approaches do not replace or eliminate the need for individual accommodations, they can help create more inclusive learning environments and reduce barriers for a broader range of students.

Inclusive exam environments

The environment in which students complete an in-person assessment can influence their focus, comfort and ability to demonstrate their learning. Thoughtful planning of the physical space and assessment procedures can help create conditions that support student success and minimize unnecessary barriers.

Online Assessment Room (OAR)

If you have a student or students that require an alternative arrangement for an online exam, such as extended time, a distraction-reduced environment, time zone accommodations, or a short-term absence, instructors can book the Online Assessment Room (OAR). The OAR is a Zoom-based invigilation service supported by both LTI and the Office of Registrar and Enrolment Management (OREM).

Submit requests at least 10 business days before the exam by emailing us (we will respond to urgent requests on a case-by-case basis). Please note that assessments must be able to be administered and invigilated online.
