Support for Academic integrity

We have a dedicated academic integrity and learning facilitator, who offers dedicated one-on-one appointments to support students and instructors in understanding and upholding academic integrity. Topics include the responsible use of generative AI tools, understanding plagiarism, navigating UVic's academic integrity policy and academic collaboration in group work. Appointments are available both in person or online.

We have several self-paced Brightspace courses to help students put academic integrity into practice. Each unit addresses a common academic integrity issue students encounter at UVic. Undergraduate and graduate courses are available, with an instructor-focused course on navigating student conversations coming soon.

GenAI considerations

The rapid growth of Generative AI (GenAI) tools has raised important questions about academic integrity and assessment. The extent to which GenAI tools are permitted or incorporated into a course is at the instructor's discretion, informed by disciplinary norms, learning outcomes and program context.

Instructors are encouraged to address academic integrity proactively by discussing expectations with students, designing assessments that emphasize critical thinking and authentic work and using GenAI thoughtfully as a learning opportunity where appropriate.

We encourage you to use the following pledge in your class assessments and exams and adjust language as necessary to fit your needs.

Syllabus statement

Academic integrity is fundamental to all scholarly work. At the University of Victoria (UVic), students are expected to comply with the university’s academic regulations and must not engage in acts of dishonesty, falsification, misrepresentation, or deception in any academic work. Violations of the University’s academic integrity policy may result in academic or disciplinary consequences.

Below is a pledge for students to sign and share with you:

I understand that I must abide by UVic academic regulations and observe standards of “scholarly integrity,” (no plagiarism or cheating).

I will do my work/take the exam myself without collaborating with another person. I will not share any information about the exam with others.
