Undergraduate admissions
The School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education (EPHE) offers 3 undergraduate degree programs at the University of Victoria:
- Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology
- Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and Health Education
- Bachelor of Arts in Physical and Health Education
There are 2 points of entry to our Kinesiology and Recreation and Health Education programs:
- direct from high school into Year 1 of the program
- as a post-secondary transfer student into Year 2 or later of the program
If you have completed post-secondary courses (excluding any through the uStart program), then you must apply as a Year 2 entry.
Please note: there is no direct entry into the Physical and Health Education program. See the program page for more information.
Visit the following links for specific information about each program's admission requirements, application deadlines and fees:
For more general admission info, please refer to UVic's undergraduate admissions page.
Application timelines
Application deadlines
For both Year 1 and Year 2 applicants, you have until Jan. 31 to submit your application for September entry of the same year.
For Year 2 applicants: you must complete all transfer admission requirements by April 30. Your grades must be documented with UVic by May 31.
Year 1 offers
Early (conditional) offers
We'll send these out starting in January to high school applicants with competitive first term Grade 12 grades
Standard offers
We send these in June or July to high school applicants based on your grades in the required Grade 11 and 12 prerequisite courses
Year 2 (transfer) offers
Early conditional offers
These are sent in January to transfer applicants who have both:
- completed (or are in-progress) all admission requirements
- a competitive GPA
Conditional offers must be accepted by May 1.
Standard offers
These are sent in late May and early June to transfer applicants.
For all applicants:
- Admission cutoffs vary each year and are determined by the grades of applicants and the number of places available.
- A program may occasionally continue accepting applications after the published deadlines in cases with high demand and increased capacity.
- If a program is still accepting applications after the posted deadline, you'll be able to select it when applying to UVic in EducationPlannerBC (high school and external transfer applicants) or via My UVic application (internal UVic transfer applicants).
- If a program is no longer accepting applications, you won't be able to select it in EducationPlannerBC or My UVic application (or complete an in-progress application).
Transfer students
If you are transferring from another recognized institution, or if you've completed other recognized tertiary studies, you must apply through the standard admission process.
Grades for transfer courses you are using to meet our program prerequisites must be documented with UVic by the deadline specified on your application checklist.
Up to 30 units of a 60-unit degree (i.e., half of a degree) can be completed through approved transfer credits. Note that there is a minimum number of upper-level courses (i.e., 300-400 level) that must be completed at UVic (18.0 units of the required 21.0 upper-level units). Course substitutions are not possible.
You can take many 100- and 200-level EPHE courses without being admitted to the Kinesiology, Physical and Health Education, or Recreation and Health Education programs. However, many upper-level courses are restricted to students in these programs. Students in these programs also have priority registration.
Course prerequisites and restrictions can be found in the UVic Academic Calendar or the university timetable.
Indigenous applicants
The Faculty of Health reserves 5% of the seats in all the faculty's programs for Indigenous applicants who meet the faculty's minimum program entrance requirements and Indigenous application requirements. This applies to programs offered by the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education.
Indigenous applicants to Kinesiology and Recreation and Health Education are encouraged to apply online and self-identify in your application.
Visiting Canadian students
If you wish to register in an EPHE course as a visiting student, you must complete an application for admission to UVic and provide the following:
- a letter of permission or equivalent from your home institution
- transcripts
- evidence of English proficiency
Visit the undergraduate admissions site for more information about applying as a visiting student and how to start the application process.
Although your home institution may provide you with a letter of permission for courses offered by our school, not all EPHE courses are available to visiting students.
International exchange students
As an international exchange student coming to UVic, you are welcome to register in any unrestricted EPHE courses.
Courses have 4 types of restrictions:
- prerequisite-based, in which you must have completed another course or courses to be able to register
- time-based, in which a course is reserved for EPHE students until a specific date, after which registration opens to other students
- level-based, in which a course is reserved for students who have completed a specified number of units
- program-based, in which a course is reserved for students who have been admitted to a program in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education
- these courses can't be taken even if there are spaces available
If you believe that you are eligible to enroll in an EPHE course based on courses that you have completed at your home institution but are blocked by a prerequisite or level restriction, you may apply for a course registration override.
To submit an override request, you must complete an EPHE course override request form. Your request is more likely to be granted if you include supporting documentation (e.g., copy of your academic transcripts as proof that you have completed or are registered in a course prerequisite at another university or college).
EPHE course override request forms should be emailed to the EPHE program assistant.
