Our research

The School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education is a key player in the University of Victoria’s research around health and wellness.

Our research and teaching strengths include exercise and rehabilitation, occupational physiology, coaching science, physical activity for psychological and physical well-being, and biomedical research.

Partnerships

CanAssist

CanAssist is dedicated to helping people who experience physical or cognitive barriers. They provide innovative technologies, programs and services to address unmet needs. Their collaboration with UVic researchers and students increases independence, inclusion and well-being.

Research labs

  • Behavioural Medicine Lab: produces and shares innovative and population-relevant research on the psychology of physical activity and health behaviours
  • Buckler Lab: focuses on improving the opportunities that children receive to move towards or stay on a positive physical literacy trajectory, and engages in health promoting physical activity
  • Cerebrovascular Health Exercise and Environmental Research Sciences lab
  • Digital Health Lab: conducts research in the domains of digital health, health promotion and physical activity
  • Krigolson Lab (Theoretical and Appliced Neuroscience Laboratory): works to improve our understanding of the neural processes that guide human decision-making and learning 
  • Neurological and Pain Rehabilitation Lab: combines patient-oriented research, virtual/augmented reality, movement analysis and assistive technologies to improve quality of life
  • Motion and Mobility Lab: studies human movement in clinical and sport populations and enhances technology to measure and improve mobility and performance
  • SMART Lab: focuses on clinical neuropsychology, cognitive-affective neuroscience and neurorehabilitation
