The Minor in Physical Education is a 15-unit minor that can be combined with most UVic majors and is mainly intended for students wanting to become secondary school physical and health education teachers.

As part of the physical education minor, you'll gain:

  • an understanding of fundamental movement skills across a range of physical activities
  • the ability to develop student-appropriate learning experiences
  • an appreciation of critical issues in the discipline of physical education
  • the opportunity to develop your professional problem-solving skills
  • hands-on experience working in different physical environments with students from local schools

How to declare your minor

Declaring a Minor in Physical Education is a 4-step process:

  1. Make a program declaration request through an adviser in your current faculty.
  2. Your faculty adviser will send the declaration request to the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education's (EPHE) academic adviser.
  3. The EPHE academic adviser will declare the minor in your program and notify your faculty adviser that the minor has been added.
  4. Your faculty adviser will then make any necessary adjustments to your degree evaluation and notify you that your degree program has been updated.

Note: The Minor in Physical Education can only be added to a student's program by a Faculty of Education adviser approved by EPHE. The number of students able to add the minor may be limited by EPHE based on the availability of spaces in courses required for the minor.

Physical education career pathway

The Minor in Physical Education is 1 of 4 pathways that we offer towards a physical education career. To become a secondary school physical education teacher, you must complete an undergraduate degree, then a post-degree professional program, and then apply for certification as a teacher in British Columbia or elsewhere.
