This Bachelor of Education Elementary Curriculum is a 4-year teacher education program that earns you a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. You may complete it in Victoria or Cranbrook.
This program will prepare you to teach in elementary/ middle years classrooms (kindergarten to grade 7). Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to apply for a BC Teaching Certificate.
Program pathways
There are three different pathways to get started in this program. Students on all three pathways need to complete the pre-core requirements (program year 1) before entering core professional studies (program years 2-4).
Pathway 1: Direct entry at UVic (start BEd in program year 1)
- If you don’t have any college or university studies you may apply for direct entry.
- You'll complete your pre-core requirements as a Faculty of Education student.
- During your pre-core studies, request to progress to your BEd core professional studies by January 31.
- This pathway is offered at the Victoria campus only.
Note: If your application for direct entry is unsuccessful, you may ask the Undergraduate Admissions Office to switch your application to the Faculty of Humanities or Social Sciences then complete pathway 2.
Pathway 2: Apply from within UVic (start BEd in program year 2)
- Complete your pre-core requirements in another faculty at UVic.
- During your pre-core studies, apply to enter the BEd core professional studies by January 31.
- You may apply to the Victoria or Cranbrook campus.
Pathway 3: Apply from outside UVic (start BEd in program year 2)
- Complete your pre-core requirements at another college or university.
- During your pre-core studies, apply to enter the BEd core professional studies by January 31.
- You may apply to the Victoria or Cranbrook campus.
Important dates
- Complete your 75 experience hours (experience requirement) by January 31
- Apply or request to progress to start core professional studies by January 31
- Complete all academic (course & grade) requirements by April 30
Pre-core requirements
Students in all three pathways must complete the pre-core requirements, which include both academic (specific course and grade requirements) and experience requirements, as outlined below.
Academic requirements
Note: Each required course listed refers to a half-year course worth 1.5 UVic units, which is equivalent to 3-4 credits at some BC colleges and universities.
Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
English grade requirement: UVic C+ (3.00 on the UVic 9‑point scale) minimum in each course
You'll need:
- One literature course paired with a literature or composition course
- At least one course that satisfies UVic’s Academic Writing Requirement if you haven't satisfied it already
- Courses taught by an English department
We cannot accept:
- Foundational/preparatory courses that do not satisfy UVic's Academic Writing Requirement
- Courses in business/technical writing, communications, creative writing, journalism, linguistics or some cultural studies topics
- Courses from an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English

Course requirements: Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
You'll need:
- Courses focused on the Canadian experience that cover topics taught in the BC elementary social studies curriculum
- Courses that cover the whole of Canada
We cannot accept:
- Courses with Canadian literature, art history or fine arts topics (e.g UVic CS 101)

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
Math grade requirement: UVic C+ (3.00 on the UVic 9‑point scale) minimum average between both courses
You'll need:
- At least one course that was completed no more than ten years before program entry
- Courses taught by a math department
We cannot accept:
- Courses with pre-calculus or introductory college algebra topics
- Social science courses (such as economics, geography, psychology or sociology courses) that cover math related content
Note:
- You may take a maximum of one approved statistics course (1.5 units) if it is from a math department

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
You'll need:
- Courses focused on science topics taught in the BC elementary science curriculum.
- At least one course that was completed no more than ten years before program entry.
We cannot accept:
- Social sciences courses such as anthropology, psychology and most geography courses. We may be able to accept a physical geography course (science focus, not social science).
- We recommend that you take courses with a lab. This helps prepare you for the classroom because elementary teachers use a field-based, hands-on approach to teaching sciences.
- We recommend you take courses in two different approved science subjects.
- You may take a maximum of one approved human science/anatomy/physiology course (1.5 units).

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
- These are part of your pre-core requirements, but you may delay one or both to a summer session following program year 1 or 2.
- You need to choose courses from subjects related to those taught in BC schools.
- You may take additional approved English, Canadian studies, math, and/or science courses.
- We recommend you take one or more approved French course because you’ll teach French in your classroom. Note: The BEd program includes EDCI 469 Teaching Oral French. University French is not a prerequisite to EDCI 469.
- We cannot accept courses from professional programs such as child and youth care, social work, and education.
- Consult an Education Adviser if you are unsure about your choices.

Requirement: 12.0 unit sessional GPA of at least UVic C+ (3.00 on the UVic 9‑point scale)
- UVic calculates this GPA using your most recent session to April 30.
- If that session includes fewer than 12.0 units of graded studies (8 typical UVic courses), then we will use your prior sessional average(s) to total 12.0 units.

Experience requirement
You must have a minimum of 75 hours of practical experience (paid or volunteer) working with children/youth in educative ways to be eligible to enter core professional studies.

- check that you meet all of the course requirements , including ensuring you have the necessary prerequisites
- pay attention to notes on mutually-exclusive and cross-listed courses
- check enrolment restrictions in the course timetable
Transfer credit for non-UVic studies
If the UVic Undergraduate Admissions Office has granted transfer credit for studies you completed elsewhere, you may consult Education Advising to find out if it is acceptable towards the current admission requirements.
If transfer credit has not yet been granted, you may use the BC transfer guide for partial information. In some cases, we might be able to provide an unofficial estimation of expected future transfer credit to aid you in your planning. Official transfer credit is only determined by the Undergraduate Admissions Office upon UVic admission.
