Commercial vehicles

If you're making deliveries or otherwise using a work vehicle on campus (not including UVic and municipal vehicles), you need to know how UVic's vehicle and parking regulations apply to you.

UVic is designed as a pedestrian-oriented campus. If you operate a vehicle on campus, you're  responsible for driving and parking in a way that's safe, courteous and avoids conflict with pedestrian traffic.

UVic's service roads, shared paths, loading docks and loading zones are restricted areas. Motor vehicles aren't permitted, but there are some exceptions for commercial vehicles.

Delivery vehicles

Marked delivery vehicles may make deliveries inside Ring Road.

  • You may use service roads and shared paths to get to your delivery destination. Do not drive in prohibited areas, including the central quad.
  • You may stop briefly in a loading dock or loading zone to load, unload, and make your delivery. Don't stay longer than you have to.
  • Follow the speed limits in restricted areas.

This doesn't apply to unmarked delivery vehicles. If you use an unmarked delivery vehicle or want to use a personal vehicle to transport equipment within Ring Road, you can apply for a restricted area permit (RAP).

Restricted area permits

A restricted area permit (RAP) allows a vehicle to use service roads, shared paths, and loading docks and zones. They're typically issued to contractors making deliveries or doing work in classroom and office buildings. They don't confer parking privileges.

RAP applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. To apply, contact us.

Parking

All of UVic's traffic and parking regulations apply to commercial vehicles. If you want to park on campus, you must purchase a permit and park in a marked parking space.

Prohibited areas

Motor vehicles aren't permitted in prohibited areas. This includes marked delivery vehicles and work vehicles with RAPs. Prohibited areas include:

  • the main quad
  • pathways and trails
  • grass and turf

Parking is also prohibited:

  • on roads, grass areas, boulevards and sidewalks
  • adjacent to yellow curbs
  • at building entrances
  • in loading zones (except when loading and unloading, and for no longer than necessary)
  • any other area not designated for parking

Speed limits

The speed limits on the UVic campus are, unless otherwise posted:

  • 30 km/h for roads
  • 15 km/h for parking lots and service roads
  • 8 km/h for other restricted areas
