Apply to Spring TA Positions

There are approximately 60 positions ranging from 98 to 150 hours each for the period between January and April 2024. Most positions are for about 98 hours in total, and are distributed as 8 to 12 weekly hours for 12 to 14 weeks. Teaching Assistants mark assignments and midterms, instruct tutorials, or work in the Assistance Centre, which provides one-to-one tutoring with University of Victoria students who are enrolled in our first and second year Mathematics and Statistics courses.

Expression of interest for 2024 spring sessionals

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites expressions of interest for the delivery of one or more courses to be offered in person in the Spring term, January – April 2024. In keeping with Article 13.01 of the Agreement between UVic and CUPE 4163 (Component 3), Expressions of Interest are being sought from Graduate Students, adjunct faculty, Postdoctoral Fellows and sessional instructors in the department as well as from other interested parties.

Dr. Shelley Bull from the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute Sinai Health System, Toronto, will give a Lansdowne Lecture talk "Genome-wide association studies: How molecular technology, biology, epidemiology, and statistical genetics came together" on Tuesday, Sept 26 between 3:30-5:20 PM in Cornett A225.

Renowned mathematical ecologist Mark Lewis returns as Kennedy Chair

From predicting the spread of COVID-19 to protecting polar bears in the wake of climate change, mathematical biology is quickly becoming a vital tool for addressing world problems. During his 30 years in the field, Mark Lewis has been part of its explosive growth. Joining the University of Victoria in 2022 as the inaugural Gilbert and Betty Kennedy Chair in Mathematical Biology, Lewis is well-positioned to strengthen the discipline at UVic, while his numerous research projects continue to have extensive impacts around the world.

Srivastava on Web of Science Group list of Highly Cited Researchers

Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Hari M. Srivastava for being named once again a Web of Science Group (Clarivate Analytics) Highly Cited Researcher for 2022. Very few researchers earn this distinction and Srivastava has been named seven times, having done so previously in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. A Highly Cited Researcher has published multiple highly cited papers, defined as papers ranking in the top 1% by citation, considering both year and field of publication, during the last decade.

The Scholar Program supports early-career health researchers who are building leading-edge health research programs, training the next generation of scientists and expanding their potential to make significant contributions to their field.
