Funding

The Faculty of Graduate Studies awards a limited number of university fellowships on a university-wide competitive basis. 

The department awards scholarships on a competitive basis. No special form is required but students seeking a fellowship are advised to submit their completed application by January 15th. The department also employs a number of teaching assistants. An application must be submitted to receive a TA position. Applications are due to the graduate assistant in August.

Graduate students are encouraged to apply for grants and fellowships from a number of other agencies including Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council; Maritime Awards Society of Canada Graduate Fellowships; Commonwealth Scholarships; Department of National Defence Scholarships. Faculty of Graduate Studies Online Conference Grant

While travel restrictions are in place, The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) have temporarily reallocated a portion of the Graduate Student Travel Grant Fund to a grant for students intending to present at or remotely attend online conferences. Students are reimbursed for online conference fees only upon completion of the conference. The FGS administers this fund, which is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible graduate students. Priority will be given to first time recipients (including recipients of a FGS travel grant), as long as their applications are received at least two months prior to the month of the conference and they meet all the other eligibility requirements at the time notices are sent.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You are registered in 1.5 units in the term in which the conference takes place
  • You have not yet received a FGS online conference grant (or travel grant) for the current fiscal year (April 1 - March 31)
  • Your supervisor or advisor has approved the grant application
  • You have a confirmation of conference registration

Award Amounts:

A maximum of $300 to present or attend conferences online

To Apply:

Fully complete the application and submit by email to fgsschol@uvic.cano more than four months prior to the date of the conference. Applications submitted after a conference will not be considered. Only complete applications will be considered.

Small amounts of travel funds are available for graduate students to present conference papers, attend conferences and do research.

The main source of funds is the Faculty of Graduate Studies who has an application available here. Funds are allocated on a first come, first serve basis so it is important to get your application in as soon as you have a plan. 

  • A maximum of $600 to present a paper/poster at a conference outside BC, Alberta or Washington State.
  • A maximum of $400 to present a paper/poster at a conference outside of Vancouver, Vancouver Island, but within BC, Alberta or Washington State.
  • A maximum of $300 to be used to attend conferences/workshops, or to conduct research within and outside of BC Alberta, or Washington State.
  • A maximum of $150 to present or attend conferences/workshops or do research in Vancouver, Seattle or on Vancouver Island.

The History Department has grants available ($150-$600) to supplement other funding sources for conference or research travel. For conference travel please send an invitation to present a paper and for research travel please send a short description of the research and archives and have your advisor send an endorsement to the graduate director.

There is a competitive Hackett travel grant for $950 available for Humanities Students wanting to travel to a European Union. The deadline for applications for 2013-14 is September 30.  More information here.

If you are working as a Teaching Assistant, you can also apply for funding from your union, CUPE 4163. These grants are available for students attending or presenting at conferences.
