Admissions requirements

Information for the September 2026 intake is now listed below.

This Bachelor of Education Secondary Post-degree Program is a 16-month teacher education program that earns you a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and will prepare you to teach in secondary classrooms (grades 8 to 12). Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to apply for a BC Teaching Certificate.

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the academic (course, grade and bachelor's degree), teachable subject area, and experience requirements outlined below. 

Admissions into the UVic Teacher Education Program is competitive. Please note that meeting the minimum admission requirements is not a guarantee of admission.

Important dates

  • Submit your application by January 2
  • Complete and submit your 75 experience hours (experience requirement) by January 2
  • Complete all academic (course, grade, and bachelor degree) requirements by April 30

Academic requirements

The Undergraduate Admissions Office will determine your eligibility for admission to UVic when you apply. 

You must have completed a 4 year Bachelor's degree that is recognized by UVic. The undergraduate admissions office will confirm if UVic recognizes your degree when you apply.

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)

English grade requirement: UVic C+ (3.00 on the UVic 9‑point scale) minimum in each course

You'll need:

  • One literature course paired with a literature or composition course
  • At least one course that satisfies UVic’s Academic Writing Requirement if you have not already satisfied it
  • Courses taught by an English department

We cannot accept:

  • Foundational/preparatory courses that do not satisfy UVic's Academic Writing Requirement
  • Courses in business/technical writing, communications, creative writing, journalism, linguistics or some cultural studies topics
  • Courses from an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English

Grade requirement:  an average of at least UVic 3.00/C+ 


Your grade requirement will be calculated on your: 

12.0 unit sessional GPA
  • UVic calculates this sessional GPA using your most recent session
  • If that session includes fewer than 12.0 units of graded studies (8 typical UVic courses), then we will use your prior sessional average(s) to total 12.0 units.  
30.0 unit sessional GPA
  • UVic calculates this sessional GPA using your most recent 30 units (20 typical UVic courses) to December 31.
     
Teachable subject area GPA

You need an average of at least UVic 4.00/ B- 

  • Education Advising calculates this GPA using your approved studies in one to two teachable subject areas. See your teaching area pre-admission worksheet(s) below for more information. 
The competitive admissions average: The most recent 12-unit (8 typical UVic courses) sessional GPA to December 31 will be used to determine the selection of eligible applicants into the program.

  • Your GPAs are calculated by the Undergraduate Admissions Office when you apply

Teachable subject area requirements

You will need to meet the requirements for one or two teaching areas to apply for this program.

The requirements for each teaching area are outlined on the pre-admission worksheets below. These worksheets are updated every fall for the following year's September intake, so watch for changes as your prepare to apply.

If you are applying with a Spanish teaching area, you must also apply with a second teaching area other than Theater or Computer Science.

If you are applying with a Theatre teaching area, you must also apply with a second teaching area other than Spanish or Computer Science. 

Use the information above to help plan your courses. You may be able to complete some or all of the course requirements within your first degree. Any remaining course requirements will need to be completed in addition to your first degree.
 
If you already have a bachelor's degree, you can still complete the admission course requirements by applying to UVic as a non-degree student or by taking approved courses at another college or university.

Experience requirement

In addition to the above academic requirements, students must have a minimum of 75 hours of practical paid or volunteer experience working with children/youth in educative ways.
