Understanding Power-Over: Faculty and Librarian Challenge!

As part of UVic's 5 Days of Action, VPAC is challenging all faculty members and librarians to complete the Professional Responsibilities in Power-over Relationship Brightspace course, developed to support faculty members, librarians and others who supervise, mentor or otherwise hold positions of responsibility in relation to students, staff and early career faculty and librarians.

This asynchronous, self-paced course is designed to help participants understand and navigate professional responsibilities in situations involving power-over relationships. It equips participants to recognize, avoid and manage actual, perceived and potential conflicts of interest, and to understand how power dynamics can contribute to situations involving sexualized violence. Through case studies and interactive activities, participants will explore best practices for creating respectful and accountable learning and working environments. The course also outlines pathways for addressing declared and undeclared conflicts of interest, as well as the potential consequences of power-over relationships.

Faculty members and librarians must complete the course by December 31, 2026 as part of their training requirements. This challenge is an opportunity for faculty members and librarians to complete their training and show their support for 5 Days of Action and the UVic Community.

To inspire some competitive spirit, the first Faculty to reach an 80% completion and the department with the highest completion rate as of October 30 will be celebrated by the Vice-President Academic and Provost with refreshments or lunch at a future Faculty Council meeting.
