Ocean Sciences
Why choose Ocean Sciences at UVic?
Study ocean science where it happens — on the coast of Vancouver Island.
The Ocean Sciences minor at UVic lets you explore the biological, chemical, geological and physical processes that shape our oceans while gaining hands-on research experience in real marine environments. You’ll study ocean systems in Saanich Inlet and the Salish Sea, build practical scientific skills through fieldwork and lab research, and learn techniques used by professional oceanographers while analysing real-world ocean data.
Customize this minor
To tailor this minor, you’ll have the opportunity to take classes that give you a well-rounded understanding of ocean science and ocean life. You can take a physics approach to study the fluid mechanics of the ocean or look at the biological side of oceans and examine fish life and marine ecology. Tailor your minor to suit your interests!Oceanographic Field School
Take your learning beyond the classroom with the Oceanographic Field School at the world-renowned Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. During field school you will:
- collect oceanographic data in coastal waters
- analyse samples in research labs
- work with real scientific instruments and monitoring tools
- collaborate with instructors and fellow students in the field
This immersive experience helps you apply classroom knowledge to real oceanographic challenges.
Marine research vessel
As an undergraduate student, you may have opportunities to work aboard the MSV John Strickland, UVic’s coastal research vessel. This 15-metre ship supports scientific fieldwork in
- the Salish Sea
- the west coast of Vancouver Island
- nearby coastal research sites
Working aboard the vessel gives you first-hand experience with:
- ocean sampling techniques
- scientific instruments used in marine research
- real oceanographic data collection

Co-operative Education (Co-op)
- Through UVic’s Co-op program, you’ll apply what you learn in paid, career-related positions that count toward your degree—and give you a head start after graduation.
- Co-op is available to everyone, including international students with co-op work permits.
- On average, 70 percent of UVic Co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand.
- Unlike at some universities, at UVic, you don’t have to compete for a spot in Co-op.
