Defer your offer

If you've been admitted to a first-year program but need to change your start date, you can ask to defer your admission to the next September.

Can I defer my offer?

Deferrals are usually only available to current high school students, and most other applicants must reapply when they are ready to begin their studies.

Examples of opportunities or circumstances that are considered as reasonable grounds for deferral are:

  • participation in an exchange or volunteer program
  • financial necessity
  • personal health or psychological affliction
  • distress or responsibility regarding an immediate family member

Deadline & conditions

The deadline to submit a deferral request is August 1.

Requests to defer admission should not be submitted until after an initial offer of conditional admission has been received.

  • All conditions of the offer must be met before the deferral decision can be made (i.e. after final grades have been received).
  • Deferral decisions for programs with supplemental applications will be made in consultation with the department.
  • If you defer your admission and then attend another post-secondary institution, your deferral will be cancelled and you'll have to reapply for admission to UVic.

Housing & scholarships

Housing and scholarships will also be considered for deferral.

  • If you are eligible for the first-year housing guarantee and your deferral is approved, you will still be eligible when you start at UVic.
  • If you've been offered an entrance scholarship, contact awards2@uvic.ca to discuss your intention to defer.

Apply for deferral

Submit your request to deferral@uvic.ca with the following information:

  • Your UVic student number.
  • The faculty and program to which you have been accepted.
  • The reasons for your request.
  • All available supporting documentation (e.g. physician's letter, proof of exchange program, etc.).

We'll notify you of our decision by email in mid-to-late August, and provide you with further instructions.
