TA positions available for Fall 2026

The Department of Chemistry anticipates to have approximately 85 Teaching Assistant (TA) positions available for laboratory and tutorial instruction and support during the Fall 2026 term.- In-person instruction and related duties for labs in CHEM 101, 212, 260, 361, 362, 363 and 364
- In-person instruction and related duties for tutorials in CHEM 231, 234, 245 and 337
Responsibilities include some of the following:
- Participate in introductory training for TAs.
- Attend weekly or regular meetings with the Instructor for the designated course.
- In advance of the laboratory or tutorial class, read and understand all safe practices documentation provided.
- In advance of the laboratory or tutorial class, read and understand all necessary manuals and associated literature.
- Perform pre-lab setup and post-lab clean up; includes early arrival and 20-minute break.
- Teach laboratory or tutorial classes.
- Mark reports and assignments, record marks and report to students.
- Meet with students and correspond by email as necessary.
- Provide course support (i.e. invigilating, marking) for the designated course or other courses.
- Refresh and/or re-stock the labs.
TAs report to the instructor responsible for the course. Each TA position corresponds to approximately 98 hours per academic term, with compensation of $34.72/hour plus 4% vacation pay, in accordance with the CUPE 4163 salary schedule (Senior Assistants). The Fall term runs September 1–December 31, 2026
Appointees are required to attend all scheduled labs and lab meetings in person during the appointment period. Applicants may be assigned multiple sections, but total hours are adjusted to reflect shared preparation and meeting responsibilities.
All appointees must complete, or provide proof of completion of, all Department-required safety training, including basic first aid, fire extinguisher training, laboratory safety, and WHMIS. Appointees are also expected to maintain an ethical, professional and respectful position as the sole instructor of a course section.
All applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or hold a valid work permit through the end of the appointment period.
