Areas of research focus
- Sustainable fisheries
- Biodiversity governance
- Disease ecology
- Population ecology
- Integrated coastal health
Research in the Fisheries and Integrated Coastal Health (FICH) Lab aims to generate place-based data that is relevant to policy development, conservation, and fisheries management. Specific research projects are often responsive to the needs of rights-holders, and/or in partnership with coastal First Nations, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and various NGOs. These projects span fields of study including fisheries science, population ecology, disease ecology, and biodiversity governance. We use approaches including field research, experimentation, molecular ecology, mathematical modelling, and knowledge co-production. Ultimately, our goal is to generate knowledge that informs our societies' ability to manage biodiversity in ecologically and socially just ways.
Our work primarily focuses on culturally, ecologically, and economically important fish populations, including Pacific salmon and Pacific herring. We also do research on biodiversity governance spanning multiple species groups, and meta-research on research practices.
