Support your teaching term

Start of term

The start of term is a valuable opportunity to set a strong foundation for both student learning and your teaching experience. This typically means finalizing your course outline or syllabus, aligning learning outcomes with assessments and ensuring all course materials are prepared and accessible. Establishing clear expectations with your teaching team early around roles, communication practices and grading approaches helps everyone work well together. A course site that is fully set up before students arrive also goes a long way.

Early communication with students helps set the tone and expectations around course engagement, genAI tool use and academic integrity, while attention to logistics (such as classroom setup, accessibility and institutional policies) can save time and stress as the term unfolds.

During the term

As the term progresses, your focus shifts to teaching, supporting students and adapting as needed. This includes facilitating engaging learning experiences, keeping communication open with students and your teaching team and providing timely, consistent feedback on assessments.

Regular check-ins with TAs and attentiveness to how students are doing, including those who may benefit from extra support, will help keep things on track for everyone.

The end of term focuses on completing student assessments and submitting grades. This is also a natural moment for reflection. Reviewing student feedback along with your own observations can help you identify what worked well and what you might approach differently next time.
