Assistant Professor in African History (Tenure Track)

The Department of History at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track position in African history (area of specialization open). The appointment, effective July 1, 2022, will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor.

In accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, the selection will be limited to candidates who self identify as Indigenous or who are members of a visible minority group. Applicants in these groups are required to self-identify in their cover letter.


The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent at the time of appointment, or be ABD, show a capacity for outstanding research as evidenced by publications or forthcoming publications, and also demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching. As a member of the History Department, the successful candidate will join a vibrant community of scholars and contribute to both the undergraduate and graduate teaching programs.

Postdoctoral fellowship positions:

The history department at the university of Victoria welcomes SSHRC postdoctoral fellows and encourages applicants for these fellowships to consider working with members of our department.

Our goal is to attract the best new researchers to UVic. In addition to the SSHRC postdoctoral stipend, fellowship holders may be eligible for appointment to a .33 limited term position in their 2nd year teaching two courses at a salary of approximately $21,000 per year. The limited term position is subject to budgetary approval.
