Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Educational Technology (MEd)

Within this program you will specialize in one of two areas of study: Mathematics and Science or Educational Technology.

The Mathematics and Science specialization is a project-based program designed to be completed while you work. This program will help deepen your understanding of mathematics and science. You'll join other experienced teachers and educational leaders as you study these topic areas in new ways.

The Educational Technology specialization is a project-based program designed for educators, learning support staff and administrators at the K-12 or post-secondary level. This program is for those looking to develop competencies in integrating technology to enhance and transform teaching and learning.

Note: we are not currently offering a Social Studies cohort for this program.

Outcomes

Mathematics and Science

Students in this specialization will:

  • read and evaluate research literature
  • review and critique key theories and approaches as they apply to curriculum and pedagogy
  • examine technologies and pedagogies that may be used to further engage students in developing mathematical and scientific curiosity and understanding
  • explore strategies for assisting students in developing confidence and competence in problem-solving and critical thinking
  • engage in a critical analysis of the role of mathematics education and science education on the development of socially responsible citizens
  • examine and engage with current issues in the two educational fields
  • investigate a specific topic of interest and explore its significance within one’s practice.

Educational Technology

Students in this specialization will:

  • examine learning design and its application to educational technologies through the lenses of social justice and critical digital pedagogy
  • explore the research, examine research methods and engage in critical reading of educational technology literature
  • develop digital, networked and open literacies to communicate in responsible, ethical and inclusive ways
  • find, construct and share learning resources and understand various levels of privacy and licensing
  • explore modality in education (online, blended/hybrid, multi-access) and how they impact design, engagement and foster community
  • examine theory related to multimedia, learning, innovation, adoption and change at individual, classroom and system levels
  • incorporate new ideas through reflective practice that culminates in a capstone that serves as evidence of their application of knowledge

MEd applicants do not need to choose a supervisor before admission. The department will assign supervisors to each MEd cohort.
