Sonic Lab


The Sonic Lab is directed by Ajtony Csaba.

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students from all faculties and departments. 
  • An audition is recommended. Specific audition excerpts are required. Interested persons should contact the instructor for details.
  • Performs one concert per semester in the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall.
  • Details about recent performances can be found on the School of Music audio archive.

Information for the 2020/21 academic year

  • Each term will accommodate Individual projects, and up to 4 coached groups (2-8 players).
  • Pre-formed chamber music groups are welcome to apply, with or without suggested repertory.
  • Face-to-face rehearsal and coaching schedule: Mondays 1:00 - 2:20 PM and Fridays 9:30-10:30 AM. To arrange for hybrid online coaching please contact the instructor.
  • Proposals for collaborative projects involving interdisciplinary and online components are welcome.
  • Proposed reperatory from 1800-1950 by 4-8 player groups may include improvisation techniques related to the works.

Sonic Lab is UVic's contemporary and experimental music ensemble devoted to the performance of music of our time. Recent concerts have included music by Arnold Schoenberg, Edgard Varèse, Claude Vivier, John Cage, Kurt Schwitters, Steve Reich, as well as improvisation and soundpainting.
